No. That would only get you power when starting. You can use a relay and trigger it from the current ignition wire. And power the relay from the starter solenoid, but run a fuse.

Ok. That makes sense.

I am going to be doing all wiring from scratch so there is no current ignition wire or any wire for that matter.

I am a novice when it comes to any kind of wiring.

Hey.. We all had to start somewhere..

From what I remember about wiring the HEI, they say to wire it on it's own source from the ignition, so that nothing else draws the power down. Some people wire it off their 12v to the electric choke, but it said to specifically not do this either, so I ran a new line..

When you say run a new wire from the ignition, are you talking about the ICM?

What type of connection did you use?

When looking at the ICM's for sale online there seem to be some models with differing numbers of connectors. Is that what those connectors are for?

Still pretty confused. I am looking up diagrams, etc.

Sorry if I am asking simple/stupid questions.

Not a stupid question at all.. No.. The ICM is not needed. Nor is the coil. That's why I went with the HEI. It's all built into the distributor. A wire is ran from the ignition switch (12v and fused) directly to the distributor. That's why they are called '1 wire distributors'. There's actually one other connection on the distributor for a tach, but it's not needed..
