I just bought a 2002 F-150 XL and i would like to have cruise control. I have considered finding a doner truck and removing all the cruise control parts and installing them on my truck. I have all the wiring schematics from ford and it looks like I would need to replace the steering wheel and the master cylinder and i am sure many more parts.
I was wondering if the electrical wiring is in the existing harness or would i have to find a harness somewhere. Has anyone done this? i would sure like to here from someone on this subject.
I found a NOS "dealer install" kit on EBay with everything for around $300.00 It came with all the parts including the steering wheel with switches. SUPER easy to install and it worked immediately and still is. I just put it on this summer. I thought it was much easier that sourcing used parts and wondering if they worked or not. Look on eBay to see if another one is listed!
Just to follow up, I found the ebay seller NOSPARTSLTD1 and emailed them to see if they had a kit for my truck, They promptly answered my e mail that they had a kit for my truck. I ordered it and it was delivered on time with all the parts needed to hook it up plus instructions. Using the shop manual and the handy installation instruction sheet it took about 4 hours to install. I test drove it and it worked the first try.
This is a great deal and it is all ford parts. Got rid of my nasty rubber steering wheel and now have a shiny new leather one.
My neighbor bought a JC Whitney (I Know) add on kit for about 100. It was a very quick, easy install, and worked like a charm. It came with a small add on for the steering wheel, but other than that, you wouldn't know it was there. The driveshaft has a magnet that gets attached and an electronic box to read the rpms of the shaft. Under the hood is a small vacuum added servo unit and that is about all there is to that kit. It is a very simple add.
I personally like the actual Ford parts idea, but for a truck 20 years old, this way might not be a bad item to add. It all depends on the shape of the truck and how much money you have to spend to do the cc.
I recently spent $60 to purchase a 2000 Lincoln Navigator steering wheel and put it into my 98 F150. Talk about a nice add. It looks so nice, leather and wood inserts, making it stand out against the dash. The F150 air bag fits right into the Lincoln wheel, so it is a quick plug and play switch out. And, of course, the cruise control works flawlessly. All in all, a great mod, if you ask me.
