I don't think Lincoln makes a bad welder, so that should work quite well. But take Tim's recommendation on an auto-darkening helmet. And I use a Jackson like he does.

I have a Lincoln Captian America helmet.

I have an old Speedglas auto darkening helmet.
I would buy a more modern one, if this one would die...

It's not adjustable shade and sometimes I would like that feature.

Red, White, or Blue, you can't go wrong. (Lincoln, Hobart, Miller)

My Century MIG is fire engine red. Works great.

The real key to MIG is the welder setup. I know when I was learning that fighting the settings AND trying to troubleshoot my welds was like nailing Jello to a tree.

Once you get that 'bacon sound', then you can work on technique. The Miller with the auto-set feature really helps (but at a price)

Best Option? Take a class or find an experienced welder to help you out. Once you experience the right sound and understand the interactions and process, it's downhill from there.
