Has anyone used the pertronix second strike ignition in their vehicle? It sounds like a good idea but I can't find any reviews on it. I would like to know how it compares with MSD and Malory. Can anyone help?
I've researched the MSD ignition boxes. They are great and everyone says they are. But I like to try new things. This pertronix ignition box looks like it might be better. It has a second capacitive discharge spark throughout the RPM range. Not up to 3000rpm. And the timing of the second spark can be adjusted to suit the engine. It has a rev limiter. It can be had for the same price as the 6AL. It sounds better to me but I want to know how it performs compared to other brands.
What they didn't tell you then is that after 3,000 RPM, the MSD sends a single spark that burns for 20 degrees of crank rotation, which is actually more lightning than the multiple sparks, which also burn for 20 degrees. Trust me, you're not losing anything by having the one spark. Its funny to read parts catalogues, because MSD has been making the best stuff for 20+ years, so if anybody wants to sell anything, they have to advertise about the 1 thing that their product does better than MSD. You don't need a rev limiter, save $40 and get a 6A.
FWIW: I read a dyno shootout of the 6 most popular ignition controls on the market, and they were all within 3 HP and 3 ft*lbs of each other, which is within the testing error range. Point is, any CD ignition is an awesome upgrade, choose the simplest, most reliable one you can get. I like the 6A because it's usually the cheapest one around, and the tech support is awesome. TK
