go with the 5.4.......$800 is pocket change up front if you really think about it. The more power the better in anything!!!
about the three valve technology being new and unproven.... I have been reading and from what i have gathered this three valve technology, and basically this engine has been being tested and used in Australia for the past year or too- someone please correct me if I am completely wrong.
More power will let the engine work less. Its been said in the above post already. But anytime a vehicle is under powered it going to use more gas. There is no savings with a smaller engine in the long run. Three valve is simpler than the cam in block small block, less distance to move parts equals less chance of breaking things. You may find that in your area Ford offers a second 5.4 with even more HP. Go with the biggest you can get, milage can actually go up when the motor works less.
Someone mentioned the '04 has added weight...I am looking at getting my wife a F150 Supercrew 4x4. Even if I get the 5.4, do you believe it will perform sluggishly?
According to Edmunds.com the 04 F150 supercrew 4x4 weighs 5502 lbs. The 03 model weighs 5005 lbs. Will it be sluggish? I don't know, the website did not list any 0 to 60 times for the new trucks. One thing is for sure. These new trucks will need every bit of the extra power and torque they are getting to be competitive with its rivals.
I drove both the 5.4 and 4.6 both were ex cab 2wd.
The 5.4 had LOTS of power felt very good quick responce and smooth. The 4.6 lacks in all it is a DOG .I am going with the 5.4.
Originally posted by Fat Mike 5.4. It's a no brainer.
I couldn't agree more. I've driven both engines and there is NO comparison. I'm a firm believer in not buying more engine than you need, but the 4.6 is an absolute DOG compared to the 5.4. It's no wonder why they dropped the 4.2 V6: it would have been 0-60 in sooner or later....
4.6 a "puny engine, a dog? I drove it and thought it was great in the 04. Then again the truck I currently drive is an old I6 which is still less in power than any new V8. We Americans are too used to our huge vehicles for huge power. A lot of the powerful European cars still use only 4 and 6cylinder engines. V8's and higher are not common. This isn't to dig on Americans any because I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for a puny car no matter how fast it went unless it had a German brandname on it(excludes VW). My idea, drive an old 4 for a while and then transfer back to a V8 i.e. the 4.6 and it won't seem so puny anymore esp, if you try to tow with the 4 which is what lots of Europeans do.
European cars with 4 and 6 cylinder engines generally don't weigh 5,000 lbs. They also don't tow much and don't have the frontal area of a 4'x8'. The 4.6 is fine for a 2wd light duty. Put it in a 4wd towing a bass boat (big deal) and listen to it scream for mercy at 4k in 2nd gear. It's too small and underpowered for serious work.
simple question really . . .is a increase of 70 hp and 75 lb ft of torque worth $800?
You bet it is! especially in light of the fact that this power increase does not come at the expense of fuel economy or along with a "premium unleaded" fuel requirement!
Just try to find that kind of power increase for your 4.6L in the aftermarket . . . I am sure it will cost 4-5 times that $800 figure and WILL require the use of premium unl gas!
