i have a 400 built to the hotrod specs with the exception of a sp2p intake and a 600 cfm 1406 edelbrock performer. the problem is that when i drive the car it seems to be lacking alot of low end power. i gained some by setting the initial advance to like 10 degrees and now it has power right off idle (spins the tires a bit) and then it bogs down and as it spins up it gains power again and you get thrown back into the seat. is this jets accelerator pump or what, i have no experience with carbs at all so im kind of in the dark here.
Is your vacuum advance working and is it hooked up properly?
What cam did you use?
The 1406 is jetted lean on the primaries for economy, the power enrichment system is also set lean. Check the instruction book that came with your carb for some adjustment procedures and you may need a tuning kit.
im running a r.v. cam 484-510 lift 270 280 duration
the carb didnt come with a book (sadly) am i expecting too much from the runs out of the box slogan? how will I know to change jets without an o2 sensor or scope?
Dustin, pull a sparkplug and check the color. You are looking for a nice tan or gray color on the electrode area. White means it's too lean, sooty black means it's on the rich side.
If the plugs are a good color, take a look at the accelerator pump setting.....
I would try advancing timing to 13 degrees and see if you can get by without any piging. These motors are very timing sensitive especially when modified. The like a lot of initial but you have to be carefull of total timing not going over 40.
