front drive shaft question

OK so i did a s.a.s. (D60) on my 97f250 a few years back. front drives shaft let go about a year ago (tube tore off yoke i cut and welded) so i brought it to a drive line shop. tell him my ride height length (40.25 inches) and idea way just to replace tube and yoke. well he calls me the next day to tell me slip shaft is seized (could free up with penetrating oil and a press) so i have him make me up a new drive shaft. well last night i pick t up and get it home and measure it, its 40.25 fully extended. so being a little hot under the collar, i hold off to bring it back till today. i tell him its to short, he tried to tell me it doesnt need to really expand, only contract, because its a leaf spring set up and not coil springs. so as the steam began to trickle out my ears, he said he would put on a new slip shaft yoke, around 2 inches longer, so i should have about 1-1.25 for compressible length, and about 1.75 of expandable length. so its not the perfect 1.5 each way but was wondering how much room it really needs each way? sorry for the long winded post, just needed to vent a little i guess.
