column shift to floor conversion

column shift to floor conversion

Does anyone out there have any experience with converting a column shift three speed on a 1951 F1 to a floor shift? This truck has a 6 cylinder engine. When shopping for a transmission, how can I determine it will fit the six cylinder?

Welcome to the forum!

The V8 and 6-cyl flathead trannies are the same. You'll be looking for a '48- '50 light duty 3-sp. Be sure to get the sheet metal plate that mounts on the top of the trans, might as well also get the floor panel if you can.

Yes, but the shift tower has to include all the shifting forks, too.

Thanks guys for your input. Does the engine have to come out to swap the trannies? Can this be done without a lift? This would be something I have not attempted before.

I think column shifts are pretty cool, I'd keep it if I were you. Plus, you have a built in anti theft device. How many young punks know how to drive a column shift?
