Dana front axle question

I have a 61-66 Ford pickup. I can't really say what year it is because its been pieced together, restored, modified and broken many times across many owners. I know the chassis and cab are from different trucks along with the power train and fenders.

I'm doing the brakes this coming weekend and don't want to order the wrong parts and I was hoping people could help me out.

I have what appears to be a dana 44 front axle with BOM# 602787 on the tag. The filler plug seems pretty high on it and it doesn't say 44 or 60 anywhere on it, I also can't decode the BOM. The brakes are 11" x 2" drums. Does that sound factory? It's titled as a '66 F100 4x4.

Welcome to FTE

No Dana 60 front driving axle was installed on a F100/150, only installed on mid/late 1970's F250's and 1979 F350's.

These trucks have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

Front driving axles:

1961/63 F100 4WD: Spicer/Dana 44-6F

1964/65 F100 4WD: Spicer/Dana 44F

1966/72 F100 4WD: Spicer/Dana 44-7F

1964 was the first year that F100 2WD's had front/rear self adjusting brakes. F100 4WD's got 'em in 1967.

Front (11" x 2") & rear (11" x 1 3/4") brake shoes are the same: 1961/67 F100 2WD/4WD

There are different sizes of wheel cylinders.

I cannot decode the Spicer/Dana ID number of 602787 (there should be a hyphen after the 7 then a 1 or 2 numbered suffix).

Truck parts catalogs prior to 1973 don't have these numbers. Only decode the Ford axle ID tag, which was located under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover to the housing.

By now...many of these tags are missing.

Left: 1961/63 F100 (no self adjusters) / Right: 1964/72 F100 2WD - 1967/72 F100 4WD and etc (with self adjusters).

Thanks a lot. It does sound like it has the correct front axle, or at least one with interchangeable parts for what I'm doing, which is great news. As I said in the OP and my username implies I never assume anything is original on this truck given that its so pieced together.

All the tags on the cover are missing other than the BOM tag and its bolted on upside down in the wrong spot.

The full BOM number is 602787-1 I just forgot to include that as I wasn't using it in the ctrl-f pdf searching I was doing.

Cool so when I get in there I might be able to identify the year based on those parts.

People tend to swap so many parts around and...as usual...don't record where they came from, so your guess is as good as mine.

1961/66 F100 4WD's don't have self adjusters, while 1967 and later F100 4WD's do. But are these brake related parts original to the trucks they're installed on...now?

What's most important at this point is that I can order the right parts from rock auto. If they're not self adjusters I'll know to get some 1966 parts.
