Since I was already under the hood replacing my headlights, I thought I would go ahead and try advancing my timing to 14* like so many people have suggested. I unplugged the SPOUT connector ( I think at least... it was the only grey single wire connection that came off the harness betweent the coil and dizzy) and cheched my timing to see where it was at before I started. Here's the deal... I have 2 sets of timing marks. 1 set is cast into the timing gear cover on the drivers side of the engine, the other set is on the passengerside and and its more of a factory appearing bolt on setup, however the numbers are VERY small and hard to read on that one. I can only find the timing mark on the passenger side timing marks, but it 'bounces' around on me, several degrees worth. The only thing I could think of that would cause this would be a worn distributor, is there anyhting else that could be the cause before I yank out the dizzy to check it?
And would a worn dizzy be causing reduced gas mileage? I only ask because I see lots of other guys with the 4.9L who have 3.55 rear end claiming the same or slightly better gas mileage as me and I have 2.73 gears.
