So the starter has over the last week begun making a kind of metallic noise, not grinding but still not right. Looking at the setup, the lower two bolts look easy to remove. The top bolt looks like difficult. No way will a ratchet fit in there. Is the only recourse to use a combo 1/2 wrench? Those are so short you cannot get any torque on them...
another starter type issue I haven't seen before, ever. It seems that my starter motor is staying engaged and running well after I've switched from "START" to "KEY ON". Almost surges a little. It's not a stuck solenoid. Anyone seen this with the Ford starters?

The drive teeth/gear could be misaligned when acting against the flywheel/ring gear and when de-energized the plunger is not able to retract the drive gear.

That is basically what it was - many thanks. the end bushing (bronze) had worked its way out of the housing and the drive gear had significant end play. New starter installed and all is well. I do notice that the new starter motor gear disengages very well, but seems to keep running a bit longer than the old one - probably normal. One of the easiest starter changeouts I've done, ever.
