Power source

Need an opinion on what would be the best location to tap a single 12V power line to a new aftermarket water temperature gauge I am installing tomorrow night. Light source will be tapped from one of my current gauge lights so I can also dim if desired.

If your wiring is pretty much original, I would suggest the backside of the CVR. That is, the same source that feeds the CVR.
That would reduce appearance as a rat's nest, and simplify the source for troubleshooting later on.

If you are going to add a number of circuits for things like electronic ignition, electric choke, CB radio and the like, may I suggest adding a completely separate set of circuits for non-factory circuits.
I didn't want to rewire the truck, but I didn't want to overload the ignition switch and all the other original wiring with increased amperage, so I added a separate fuse box.
I rewired a fuse/relay box off a '96 F-150, powered it from the battery with a separate cable, and used modern wiring for the additions.
I left the original wiring alone for the original circuits.

Just my opinion, and hope it helps.

My wiring is 100% original unlike most everyone else. That is what made it so easy to add the oil pressure and amp gauges to the truck. Just plugged in the harness from another truck and all was fine. All I will ever add is this one extra gauge to compliment the original gauge which I don't trust 100%.

Wouldn't an after market gauge use direct 12 volts instead on the regulated 5 or so volts from the constant voltage relay like my Galaxie gauge, or do you mean to hook it to the incoming voltage to the cvr?

The CVR is only for the original gauges. Use the CVR for anything else and you will probably end up replacing it. Use 12V unregulated power for aftermarket gauges.

Hope this helps.

I thought about tapping into the cvr at power in. However, I forgot that I put an electronic one on several years ago and can't recall which line was 12V in. Was reminded when I removed the dash and looked behind it this afternoon. So with everything else wired in I thought I might try the power to the lighter since it is never used and so the gauge would have that line all to itself. We shall see since I had a party to go to and the wife was telling me it is 5:30 so I had to leave the truck till Sunday.
