OK Guys I have a 71' F100 SWB 2WD. I bought a 03' CV this weekend from the Police Surplus sale 130K on the Car, hit a deer all damage was cosmetic.
I have a 351W built .30 over mild cam heads have had a little work but nothing major done to them. 0 Miles on the Motor, I also have a 4R70W tranny and he US Shift Quick1 Controller. All I really need to complete this set up in a Carb. aka no major wiring or Computer for the Motor.
The Crown Vic has just over 130K on the clock the maintenance guy, a friend of mine told me the motor was strong and used no oil, and was still running great when they parked it. Tranny was shifting good also. Will have to figure the wiring out.
Now My Question: which route would you go? The new built 351 with the 4R70W or the Modular 4.6L with the 4-speed 4R75W automatic?
Hmm.... that's a tough choice but it's a good thing to have a choice.
In the end, I'd go with the 351W/4R70W and controller due to significantly less wiring.
I'd save the 4.6 for another project or sell it off complete to offset buying the cop car... and then get some goodies for the truck.
I regularly see former CVPI's in the yard converted to taxis and they normally have over 300K on the odometer... and as it sits, cop cars get really good maintenance because the service intervals are strictly programmed by the jurisdiction.

Torn.......
Sounds somewhat similar to my plans. Currently my '69 F -100 has a 240 and a C-4. I plan to change to a '90 Mustang 5.0L H.O. EFI engine with a '98 3.8L Mustang 4R70W transmission. I also have a Baumann (U.S. Shift Quick 1) transmission shift controller for the transmission.
If I was going to do a 4.6L installation, I would prefer to have the Cobra or '03/'04 Mach 1 DOHC 32-valve engine with an '03/'04 Mach1 4R75W transmission. (My daily driver is an '03 Mach 1 with a manual 5-spd.).
If using the older style small-block, either the 5.0L or 5.8L fuel injected engines are time tested and proven and stock as well as aftermarket parts are abundant and performance is good with either.
If the fuelie 5.0L doesn't have enough oomph to suit me, I do have an early '70s 351W and a 5.8L GT40 lower intake I could swap the fuel injection induction parts from the 5.0L engine onto the 351W.
The 4R70W is out of a Late Model 2nd Gen. V8 Explorer(I can remember the year), Baumann and I discussed it extensively before I bought the transmission and the Controller. He suggested the transmission set up.

'98-'04 are the best models of the 4R70W to have. You can tell if it's the earlier or later version by looking at the wiring harness connector sticking up out of the transmission (right side of transmission above the trans pan).
If the connector on the transmission is white, it's a '93-'97 version. If the connector sticking out of the transmission is black, it's the better '98 - up version. --2003 and 2004 will not have a hole in the tail housing for a speedometer cable or VSS.
This is the connector on the transmission to look for.
There was a guy on here that used the C/V suspension, engine, trans, wiring,AND the dash cluster. C/V cluster mounted easily behind Bump dash bezel. Just a little triming. Again I forgot who it was. If you like this idea use the search engine top o' this page and find his build.
