4x4 Shift Issues

My 11' has been giving me some issues shifting in and out of 4 wheel drive. I've always had 4 wheel drive vehicles and I know they can be finicky shifting if your wheels are turned, uneven ground etc.

Normally, I stay in 4 wheel if I know I'm going to need it, but the last month or so I've been on a cramped jobsite with a trailer and being in 4 wheel drive when not needed makes it hard to maneuver the trailer in cramped areas.

Anyway, the other day I had a trailer in tow and I started to spin in loose gravel so I had to shift. I heard a loud pop and it shifted then immediately starting flashing "check 4x4" on dash. It wouldn't shift back out. I found that unhooking the battery resets it and it shifts completely normally again. It did it to me again today and I had to unhook the battery to get it to shift. Once you unhook the battery it shifts just like normal unless you are off road with the wheels turned.

Ideas? The driveshafts and Ujoints all look normal to me.

How many miles are on the truck, GCLL? It might be a good idea to have your dealership take a look. Keep us posted on what you find out.
