Using plasti dip on wheels question

Ok picked some up for my wheels and bumpers.
Those that have done it, did you try and tape off tires?

Or did you just carefully razor knife around wheel and peel off?

When I "dipped" my the wheels on my wives VW Beetle convertible, I simply used plastic bags with painters tape wrapped tightly around the rim. I ensured there was a physical gap between the tap and the rim because that is the key to plasti-dip working well.

Here we are almost 2 years later and they still look like the day I did them. To each their own, but I got her a set of "custom wheels" for $40 and a few hours. Take your time and don't rush it and they will turn out great.

I have only had time to dip the centers so far. Found youtube video helpful and am gonna use index cards to keep dip off of tires.

Also going to pull wheels off the truck to dip.

Any problems when you removed the cue cards? Did you need to use a knife or anything to keep it from pulling from the wheel?

Cards come right out. I even reused them for 3rd and 4th wheels.
I can't afford after market so this was great for me. Midnite's truck gave me the idea. One day I may use bedliner like he did.

Getting new tires put on soon. I think I will go with black sidewalls with the black wheels.

What's everyone's preference on tire face with black wheels??

Trying to break up the truck some. The wife and daughter call it my Grandpa truck. LOL

Bumpers will be next.

I was thinking that when I do mine I'll test the combinations with black wheel / shiny caps vs shiny wheel / black caps and both black to see which one looks best. Then just go with that. Haha, that's what my son called my truck too. I'll show him!! Haha.

what kind of preparation did you do on the rims before the dip? sanding to knock clear coat off, or just a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol

I washed the truck 2 days ago. Wiped wheels with rag and blew them off with compressor. Started spraying..

I did my wheels and bumpers 2 years ago. They've held up great with minimal touchups. I've had the truck buried to the frame in mud twice with a 4 wheels spinning and no damage to the dip.

I have had to do some minor touchups to my front bumper. After years of weather/bugs/rocks hitting it at 70 mph it has a few specs of chrome showing through. I just wipe it clean and then respray those spots to keep the finish even.

I do plan on pulling my bumpers at some point and re-doing them. The back has started peeling around the bottom edges from road debris coming off the rear tires.

Another benefit its that it will protect the finish underneath. I hit a cat at work last winter on accident and dragged the right front corner of my bumper against the doors. It peeled the PlastiDip off but didn't even scratch the chrome underneath.

I'll try to grab some updated pictures tomorrow.

Good to hear on longevity.

If you plan to go back to chrome or regular paint. DO NOT sand anything!
This stuff is just clean surface and spray. It peels right off if you don't like it.

Be sure to check your lug nuts a few times. The ones on my wives car were a bit loose once they settled into the dipped/painted surface of the wheel. After I torqued them down again they were fine and remained tight on the wheel. Of course on the VW it is lug bolts and not nuts, but the same idea probably still applies.
