Bled the brakes yesterday on my 84 cause the pedal was getting way to low. At first I thought everything went well because the pedal was back up to normal. When I took it out for a test run I found that the right rear brake was locking up way to early. Before when the pedal was low all the brakes seemed even. What happened!?
Pull the right rear. The cylinder is probably leaking, or is rusted and sticking. If you do not find any of that, then the parking brake cable may be sticking on that side.
Any time I've had this happen I have found one of two things...
1) a completely stuck/frozen wheel cylinder on the side that is NOT locking up...not applying.
2) a sticking cylinder on the side that IS locking up...not releasing.
I've popped a few cylinders over the years, but I can't really recall a "locking up" issue. But then again, the loss of brake power and fluid running down the inside of my tire makes for easy trouble shooting!
Oh, and this appearing after the bleed procedure could simply be that you NOW have fluid back there to operate the brakes. i just ran into this on my dads truck. For a few years he has been wearing out front pads, but the rear shoes were showing no sign of wear. It turned out that the rear brakes had NOT been applying for all of this time. The bleed exposed rusted rear cylinders. After new cylinders the truck will throw you forward when hitting the brakes! It had gone unnoticed because the front brakes were doing the job just fine...at the expense of accelerated wear.
