48/49 F 2 Identification Help

Hello - I'm new so I'll just jump right in with both feet.
I have a 1948 /49 F 2 and would like some help figuring it out. It is a long bed V8 truck with a 4 speed and trans brake. The cab is badged F 1 and it has F 1 - 11" brakes and rear end. 5 lug wheels. - all the numbers on the truck are the following:

Frame : 87HY 104990

PLATE ON FIREWALL : 8RC 363072 AT

FIREWALL STAMP: 37 D 8 1

GLOVEBOX: 98RC 437222 - THE LEAST RELIABLE

I posted some pictures - thanks.

Welcome to FTE!

Nice looking truck. Do you have the title in your name yet? And what numbers are on it?

Welcome!

What do you mean by "longbed"? An F-1 should have a 6-1/2' bed. Is yours 8'? That would jibe with the frame #:

8 = (should be 98, I believe) 48-50
7H = 6 cylinder flathead
Y = F-3
104990 = serial number

I have a hard time telling on 48-50's, but it appears like you may have F-2/F-3 front fenders, which again would be consistent with the frame number.

Like Joe asked, what's on the paperwork?

Those are F2-6 front fenders, but it looks like the rears are F1. 5 lug would be a swap into a F2-3 (should be 8 lug). Looks like someone used a couple of trucks to assemble one good one (no problem with that as long as the title matches and you are happy with it). After this many years, it is difficult to find an "original" one. Looks nice.

Nice truck. Thanks for the pic's Joe.
I hope the paper work and numbers
work out for ya Bud. Damn nice truck
to have to part out. But it would be
a great parts truck to build what ya want.

8 = (should be 98, I believe) 48-50
7H = 6 cylinder flathead

I have a hard time telling on 48-50's, but it appears like you may have F-2/F-3 front fenders, which again would be consistent with the frame number.

Like Joe asked, what's on the paperwork?
Frame
8= 1948 (9= 49-50)
7H 226 Flathead 6
Y=F-3

So the frame says it's a 48 F3 6 cylinder 8' bed

Firewall
No Year
8R = flathead V8 239
C= F1 6' bed
363072= serial# rather low, if the missing number was a 9 it would probably be a 1949, but being an F1, this in no way belongs on this truck
AT = Atlanta plant

Glove Box

9= 1948-50
8r= flathead V8
c = F1
437222 = higher number probably 1950
like the firewall tag this does not belong on this truck either

You list the glove box tag as the 'most reliable', if you say that because it matches the paperwork, be VERY CAREFUL as that number DOES NOT in any way shape or form match the truck.
Your truck is a 'long bed truck', there was no such thing as a long bed F1
Your front fenders have the larger openings that belonged to the F2 through F6 trucks, they were different from the F1 trucks.
You may be able to 'get away' with it, but in reality, the ONLY number that is legal for the truck is the one stamped into the frame. If you have paperwork that matches that number you are good to go regardless of the fact that the motor and suspension was changed.

Actually, he said it was the "least reliable"...

So, it looks like the glove box tag came with the F1 body that was put on a truck with a V8. Has the correct placement of the battery for a V8. Except that the frame says it's a I6. So nothing matches. The paper work is going to tell what you can call it...

I hope you have it titled.

AFAIK F-2s didn't come with a trans brake, that's an F-3 feature. To me the sheet metal looks all F-2/3. If the back fenders were from an F-1 they'd really stick out, F-1 have wider back fenders.

To me it looks like someone swapped half ton axle and hubs under a F-3.

The transmission mounted hand brake is a mid to late year '51 and '52 feature on both F-2s and F-3s. The early 1951 Salesman's Handbook describes it as "Brake, Hand: Cable with equalizer applying rear wheel brakes." The late year 1951 pages for both models describe it as "Brake, Hand: Drum and contracting band." Naturally the '52 handbook says the same.

This member simply has a nice truck that is an assortment of parts. Getting its title to match the frame is what matters. Corrected repop data plates can be mounted later. Stu

Edit - if it has the transmission mounted brake the p.o. forgot to remove the older brake handle from the left footwell. Stu

Thanks For the quick response

Wow - thank you for ALL the feedback. Yes I have a clear title, it is under the glove Box #, but that is what the average person would look at I assume. The car came from Georgia where they do not use titles - only bill of sale, so it was probably never an issue. The truck was restored at some
point in its life, they most likely used the best of two trucks? the majority being F2 / 3 frame and drive line and put the F1 brakes on it ? The cab ??
I love it - it's all 6 volt and we have it pretty reliable. The onlyy part I have not been able to find is a Rear Slip Yoke on the front of the aft Drive shaft
just behind the center carrier bearing. I went to a drive line shop today and they are going to make me a new drive shaft with slip yoke and new U Joints
for $250.00 She will be back on the road by Saturday........

I don't think it matters what the average person would look for as far as the title goes. It's more important what the state of Florida looks for. Is the title already in your name? Is the truck registered in Florida?

Good luck with your "new" truck! We'll all be expecting some pictures in the "Through the Windshield" thread after you get the drive shaft replaced.

And there's probably someone on here with an F1 that would like to have that parking brake handle...

My stock F2 has always had a trans brake. But it was built with the HD 3-speed and perhaps those two were always paired together.

As said, both models switched to the tranny brake in 1951. One of my 51s was built 3/12/51 and has the tranny brake which says the change occurred fairly early in the year. Stu

V8 Serial / ID #

One more question - where are the serial #'s located on the Flathead V8 ?

Thanks, Lance
