hello I have a 1980 f 159 with a 302 the block code is 8k25 and below that is d90e-6015-e3a can any one tell me if this the correct year engine for this truck ? I am wanting to get a replacement engine for it? thank you for any help
8 - the year of the decade. K- the month, A through L, as in months 1 to 12. So K would be November. 25 - the day of the year. All this explains is what day month and year of the decade the engine block was cast. So, it looks like 11-25-1978. Or 1988. The D9 in the D90E represents 1979 for the original engineering number, but can go years without it being updated. As far as it being a 1978 cast with 1979 engineering number. I've run in to a couple of Ford engine parts like that, with the engineering number set for the new year, early in the previous year.

So K would be October 25 - the day of the year. All this explains is what day month and year of the decade the engine block was cast.
So, it looks like 10-25-1978. D9 in the D9OE represents 1979 for the original engineering number, but can go years without it being updated.

D9OE block cast October (K) 25, 1978 (8). A = January, M = December, the letter I is skipped.
D9OE-6015-E3A is the block casting number, not an engineering number. Casting numbers are foundry marks...cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.
Since historically, new vehicles are introduced in September of the previous year, production begins in August. An engine block cast 10/25/1978 would be installed in a 1979.
But it could be many months before the completed engine is installed in a vehicle, because once blocks are cast, they are placed outside to season, this takes at least a month.
Then the block is shipped to an engine plant where it is finished, then the completed engine is shipped to an assembly plant, where it is "banked" until required.
AFAIK, the 1980 302 block casting number prefix is E0AE
Never noticed the letter I was skipped. That makes a lot more sense now as to the 352 that came out of our 64 Galaxie. Always thought it was cast a month after the car was built. Makes more sense now. Thanks for the correction.
