Maybe this should be in the electrical section, but its on a Bronco, so I posted here.
Situation is a 93 Bronco, 302, alternator charging fine, but bearing(s) screaming off and on. Has anyone ever replaced the front bearing in this alternator? I got it off, figuring it couldn't be that hard. I can split it open, and get at the rear bearing ok, but how do you get to the front? Do you go in from behind the pulley (which I dont have off yet)?.. Any help is appreciated.
I have never done it but I would think that removing the pulley would be a necessity since the armature is a permanent resident of the shaft. You will need to get the armature and driveshaft out of the front half of the housing to get at the bearing. This is only my own personal logic and deduction based on my knowledge of the part in question. There may be a specific process for this repair.
Hi, rebuilding alternators is just one of those easy things.....if you have the right tools. There are alternator rebuild tool kits available, I think Eastwood has one http://www.eastwood.com. They have the presses and inserters needed to get the bearings out, AND back in.
The rebuild kits are available from parts stores. They have the front and rear bearings, seals, and little parts needed. If you are going to replace the front bearing, do the rear too, it has been living with the whole unit.

Thanks guys... The more I looked at this/thought about it, and given the time-frame I needed my Bronco back in action, I decided to let someone else do it (a professional..hehe). Normally I hate to pay anybody to do something that I could do (or atleast *think* I could do), but this time, I guess I'll make an exception.. thanks for the responses, though.
