So I bit the bullet two weeks ago and had a Detroit True Trac installed. Wow! I went hunting in Colorado last week. The road heading to the cabin was steep and muddy. I made it up the mtn in 2WD. I'm not sure I would have made it in 4WD before. Just wanted to share how impressed I am. If you are on the fence, I would say get one.
Brother, I put one in my front diff. first and with the weight of the diesel my truck can go anywere, then I had to add a detroit to the rear to seal the deal. Love them!! enjoy
Thinking about a selectable in the front. Way down the list though. Hunting was great, as always, The Elk didnt cooperate but I did get my first black bear!
Unless you use 4wd a LOT on the street in winter, a selectable seems like a waste of money to me with the hubs and whatnot. I'd be more inclined to put a LS up front over a locker, bit more forgiving during street use if on snow, etc. Really need the differential in wheel speed up front to make it around a corner, and a locker eliminates that.
I ditched the Detroit I had in the front of my Jeep for a LS, turning in the snow in town was...interesting... Talk about wicked understeer. Granted you can just coast and with little to no power applied a locker shouldn't engage. I preferred the 'looser' engagement of the LS over the locker for this reason, and didn't lose any offroad performance in doing so.
I had out a true trac in my old f-150. I loved it. By far the best upgrade that truck ever saw. I want to put one in the 1 ton but have to wait for funding

I plow with my truck and have a 2 yard stainless sander in the back, It's like anything else you just get used to it. with the weight of the 9 ft plow I dont even notice the true trac up front, but I know it's there doing what I need it to do. I got pictures of snow up to my grill and I started in 2nd gear and pushed right through it, not to many trucks can do that, it was like an obstacle course with all the people in the 4WD's stuck once the snow built up under the truck, my baby clawed thru it, plow up of course.
Completely forgot how much heavier these rigs are than my old Cherokee, that definitely offsets the occasional ill manners - especially loaded for plowing good Lord.
Thanks bud, I do forget I stepped up to a big kid toy from time to time and not everything carries over.
I put a truetrac in my truck last year and I fill the same way. I can go in 2wd where before I would need 4wd. I have never had it act up but snow is something I don't have to worry about.
