LEAN BANK ONE

Hey guy's my 96 awd threw a code....Van does feel weird driving like there is a vacuum leak but can't find one...like 20 mph kinda feels drifty..bank one drivers side??? Any idea's o2 sensors are new in spring....Also when the van is started it seems to run rough for a bit then smoothes out.. Seems like it all started after I replaced the wires.

Since you say this started after replacing the wires (I assume plug wires), did you check them and the plugs again once this started?

Plugs and wires are good as far as I can tell. if they weren't I might have a rich condition not lean. Do you know which side is bank 1.

I don't think Aerostar engines have separate oxygen sensors for each bank; there are 2 installed downstream of where the Y pipe joins, one before and one after the cat, so there is only 1 "bank".

Bank 1 would be the right side aka passenger side (Firewall side if Transverse engine.)

What you describe sounds like a vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines, you might have dislocated or damaged one of them when replacing wires. I know on mine they are starting to show their age and I replaced a couple.

Another possibility is intake gaskets if they have never been replaced. Those are harder to determine until antifreeze starts spewing everywhere. Just ask how I know.

Only Bank 1 on the Aero V6s.
OBDII advanced PCM computer in the '96 on still outputs Bank 2 data, but random gibberish.

V6 and V8 with dual exhaust and dual CATS have both Bank 1 and Bank 2 real time data.

Bad wires would pop misfire codes.

You get to start the great vacuum line hunt, they get damaged and knocked off replacing the plug wires.

That Christmas vacuum tree has never gave me any good presents.

Shame Ford never bred a line of 2" midget auto mechanics just for the Aero.

Was the old PCV valve damaged?

On mine it was obvious; the plastic nipple part broke at the elbow. I epoxied it back together, putting extra material around the elbow.

Ok just came in from the garage my keys are greasey Lol....Pcv was wrong one I think ev 225 instead of ev 118..anhow replaced it and no difference. the check valve going to tank was bad replaced it. no change...when 1st started van shakes pretty bad until computer goes into closed loop then smoothes out. So no vacuum line issues as I pulled them off and no change. egr seems fine vac test etc. Line over to canister purge is good. canister valve ok. Next I will check fuel pressure...Any idea's

Usually when you pull a vacuum line and it does not affect the idle, then there is probably a leak. When you pull a line on an otherwise sealed system, it should affect the idle; usually it should stumble, but sometimes the idle jumps up.

In open loop cold operation, the PCM fueling is NOT controlled by the cold O2 sensor.

Only PCM coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor, MAF and locked onboard PCM cold start and cold drive away fueling tables control cold start/driveaway air/fuel mix.
Add extra air from leak, we have troubles in the Aero space shuttle engine, Houston.
No way for PCM to know extra air is upsetting the normal fixed cold start 10:1>13:1 air fuel mix.
Throw into the variable mix the high fall winter air moisture and we have even worse cold start run problems.
Trying to get even real gas to vaporize in 100% humidity cold air is not fun. Ethanol, stay home

The sequential fuel injector 4.0L engines are quick start and very smooth cold idle normally. Very consistent fine mist fuel/air mixing at intake valve opening.

Older bank injection ECU designs had slow start and rough cold idle/cold drive away. Very poor air fuel mixing especially below 32d F. with gasohol.

Thanks for all the inputs still haven't found it yet.. Althought I have been busy. Too busy to change my oil apparently...10,000 miles on synthetic...Oh well got it changed...And yesterday went to Cumby's and guess what no brakes. Main line front to back was original so it gave out...No biggey used the nickle copper stuff. All done. It was bad in 4 area's good thing it broke now and not away from home much.

Using lots of parts from my junked 96..Last week went to Nh in a big rain storm. When I got to the home depot van was driving really weird... Seems the left front axle that had a torn outer boot got all the grease washed out of it and started to sieze...Oh joy. I knew the boot was bad so what....Went to VIP and got some spray lithium and filled er up and made it home...Took the axle outa the junk and wha la...same with the rear lid pistons and drivers door window switch and a slew of other free stuff...PTL..

Later

UPDATE

Well have not found vacuum leak yet. Checked the vac lines to the dash the blk wht lines. All seems well..

Couple of things... Sometimes when I push the brake I hear a wooshing air vac leak sound. Not all the time. Runs fine when its doing it. Plus I pinched off the line to the brake booster no change.

Also just started happening van will just die. if you push on the go pedal it won't die...Seems the iac is having issues... Never never had anything like this happen.
In drive or in park. really strange.

Also all three of my vans will default to defrost on hills...maybe this van is fixed because the check valve was bad..

I have to find this leak...
