So, I'm looking to upgrade SUVs from a pos Isuzu rodeo to a Ford Expedition... My salesperson found a sweet 2005 that was everything we wanted... we agreed to price and took for test drive... when entering freeway, I commented this thing shifts so much smoother than I can with a stick... no problems.... took it to my mechanic to look over and he explained why it seemed so smooth and why I should just hand back the keys and walk away... trans was slipping bad between 2-3 gears and you need to release gas pedal to get it to shift....
sucks so bad that the SUV you wanted so bad has a bad trans and I just walked away from a $2-3k repair... but it is good to know that my mechanic caught an issue like this.... and prevented headache...
still sucks to hand back over keys to perfect expedition besides bad trans...
happy, sad...
I would guess the seller would negotiate a transmission rebuild if you were willing to negotiate. Someone, somewhere, sometime will have the transmission rebuilt and have a good expedition.
Edit: And BTW, excuse me, but welcome to the forum.
I may just do that... it is a sweet ride... if they fix trans, throw in a powertrain warranty for length of loan and fix the other minor things on my list... it could work...
the sales manager ignored my email about negotiating a trans fix and keeps sending me request for "no pressure test drive"... it's obvious these vultures don't want to fix a tranny and are waiting for a sucker to buy their expedition as is with messed up trans and all... I'm going to a different dealership to take a different expedition to my mechanic and hope this one checks out.... Johnny
if it were truly slipping badly between 2nd and 3rd, the OD OFF light on the dash should have been flashing, and there should be a PCM code stored in the transmission. plus the fluid would have been burnt and very dark.
these expeditions have a very loose converter and a very early shift pattern, which is quite different than any other vehicle i have ever driven. just kinda wondering in the back of my mind if there was really anything wrong with it.
i'd get the dealership or your trusted mechanic to pull the PCM codes, if there was a shifting problem, it should show up there with the right scanner (not the cheapie ones)
