Smogged up FE
It has an EGR valve under the carb (2 barrel) and you can see where some vacuum hoses were disconnected. The manifold is D8TE8425A and the EGR has a D4 (74) date code so I think someone changed the manifold as it is a 78 vintage. There was no air pump for the smog nor does it have the air injection holes in the heads for an air injection pump. I don't know if this was originally a California truck and I think 78 has all the smog stuff for Calif. so I think this engine was put together from parts.
Anyone know more about the smog equipment the FE's were burdened with and the Calif. smog stuff?
I am going to use the brackets, pulleys and other hardware from the front for the engine in my 65 F-100. My PS is all installed and I purchased a steering U-Joint from Helix with a 36 spline and a DD on the other. I took my steering shaft over to the machine shop and he milled the DD end so it would fit the U-Joint. I feel safer now without the rag joint.
I intend to pull the valve covers and pan for inspection and pull the intake to take a look and to replace the intake gasket as it has a little seepage. Maybe I'll pull the heads and take a look and I'll measure the stroke to see if it could be a 390. If all looks good I will sell it as a runner and if not a core. Maybe I'll find a bell housing and a starter and fire it up.
The intake has a D8 casting? The last year for the FE engines was 1976.
I'm a USN vet... AT2.. worked on P3 Orions and MH-53E minesweepers.
