some mornings on cold start , idles fine but wont accept gas at all. when put in drive it dies or gas in neutral? After unhooking bat. or resetting with superchip programmer its fine. Have replaced several sensors and cat, took in to moses ford for a 508.00 plug change, and now developing a miss under loads more than in idle but never with regularity haven't changed coils yet but do get a code lean in bank #1 . After compression check and running so good I believe its a simple thing hopefully ! Also had appalachain tire (my reg mech) clean entire feul system and put new high flow filters while there.
Not sure where to throw money next lmao ? any tips or advice is always appreciated ,Thanks in advance
On other vehicles I would say the idle air motor is sticking. When you reset it, it forces it to cycle and return to it's seat. BUT... I don't know if that's how these trucks work or not.
Thanks I'll try one of those when I do the coils Monday (payday) for that amount of money its worth a try ! Sounds like a logical thing to be causing the odd starts in mild temps / cooler usually around 30-40 degrees not really cold.
This morning it runs perfect no miss no anything wrong at all , how odd ? maybe had moisture or a wire has a cracked shield? Still changing coils in morning and the idler air valve as per tip posted
You're supposed to be able to test and/or clean the IAC valves... might not have to buy one.
If you start it up in the dark you can look for "arcing" around the wires & coils A bad coil is supposed to show up as a CEL & diagnostic code... either random misfire or a specific cylinder.
We used to attach one end of a piece of electrical wire to the engine block and wrap the other end around the shank of a screwdriver... then follow around the wires & coils looking for arcing.

How do you do the when the "wires" are buried in the head?
You can swap the #1 coil with a different coil from another cylinder and see if that lean code follows to the other cylinder. This way, you'll know it's that coil.

Ha... only maybe Honda's Formula One car had COP back then, LOL. But if the insulation on the coils was bad or the case was cracked; it should arc to the grounded "probe" I would think?
Thanks for all the tips Everyone, They are appreciated very much ! Not being a mechanic but having a lot of tools and a more time its coming together little by little
Just got my lightbar, roof rack, and switches now for actual lights !
Have replaced everything I can think of or been told would help !
Have some starts that are perfect running for the duration then on a lot of starts (cold) it will start fine and if I don't give it any throttle it will idle and warm up, Just wont accept throttle without dying out. After several key off restarts it will eventually run fine after it seems like something resets after anywhere from 1 or two all the way to 15 or so starts before this happens.
Have changed the air idle control valve on rear of intake, plugs and tune-up from moses ford (overcharged)lol , fuel system cleaning w/filters, all vacuums replaced ,bought a programmer/scanner (superchips),and only get the code p0100 for system not completing all checks I think. Also noticing a minor miss after getting up to normal operating temp, mostly during idle but is barely noticeable while driving. have had heads pressure checked and piston compression was good. In last 5 or 6 months have had a lean bank 1 code also , was told it could be a vacuum line around intake/so had all replaced systematically from top to bottom of engine .
Any different ideas or tips to check out or try would be greatly appreciated , Thanks for all the help so far everyone!
