So my alternator started smelling really bad today while driving home, I jumoved out and popped the hood and it was smoking. So what's a good alternator for 1997 f250 7.3 hd? Just your average auto parts store or no. Thanks for any input ahead of time
"Lifetime warranty" reman electrical parts at chain auto stores are a racket. Bare minimum rebuilds, shipped offshore (along with the jobs) and done on the dirt cheap. It's cheaper to honor the warranty with another shoddy reman than to build in the quality in the first place.
If you're lucky, your community still has one of those old-school auto electric rebuilder shops, with the girlie calendars on the wall, etc. Usu. only a year warranty, but they're a LOT more conscientious. Just look for a place that reeks of cigarette smoke, with very sun-faded posters in the windows and an '84 K-car parked out back.
I may be an unpopular guy to say this, but it's so easy to get to, go with the large chain store lifetime reman. Some of thebetter ones test every one. And note that there is a difference between reman and rebuilt (mostly)
