After a six week wait, I received my new warranty plate from Marti.
There are no instructions on how to install it with the rivets. Any idea how to do it?
Also, do I align the tag so that the lettering reads from the bottom up or the top down?
I've always heard from others that a tool is needed to properly install them. This info seems to indicate it, too, but probably a way to do it without the special tool.
Not sure what you mean by bottom up or top down. The lettering runs horizontally and is read from top down on the 1965 and 1966 models. I think 1964 is same/similar to 1965.
Page 27 of the MPC textual section shows an example of a 1964/65 Warranty Plate. Check it out.
For some reason I was thinking the tag installed sideways, not upright.
I asked the same question to the Mustang guys.
I installed the tag with a dab of weather strip adhesive on the back and used the flat side of a 3/16 drill bit and a small hammer to lightly tap the rivets in.
I just recieved mine also, mine came with instructions on how to remove and install the new rivets. Use a 3/16 drill bit to remove and install rivets, gently tap them out and then gently tap back in.
The drivers door on Old Blue had been replaced when the mechanic who rebuilt her back in the 90's didn't block the wheels and she slipped into reverse, rolling backwards with her drivers door open until she hit another car, crushing the original door.
After replacing the drivers side door, the mechanic cut out the warranty plate and about 6 inches of surrounding door steel and threw the chunk of metal with the warranty plate into the glove box and there it stayed until I tried to register Old Blue in Cali last year.
DMV was going nuts because there was no Warranty Plate. I ordered the rivets from Marti and they also came with instructions. The truck had been repainted (not a great job BTW!) and using the old chunk of door metal as a pattern for general placement and the warranty plate for hole location I drilled two new 3/16" holes.
Placing the plate over the holes, place the new rivets into the holes in the plate and into the holes in the door. Place a 3/16" drill bit into the rivet and tap the drill bit gently with a hammer. The rivets are soft and expand into the holes. You do not have to hit the drill bit too hard.
