2004 oilpan

Hi to all, I have a 2004 f250 with 142,000 miles on it. Yesterday I was under it to change the oil, when I noticed that the oil pan is rusting out! I've never seen anything like this, and I'm amazed that Ford would put something on that would rust that badly. I mean it's starting to flake off in chunks, and I'm going to have to replace it.
That said, does anyone know what kind of cost is associated with this, and how much of a job it is? Thanks in advance for all replies and advice. The advice on this site is the greatest!

Subcribed because I may need to replace mine too. My engine is a replacement use engine. The lab is bent quite a bit.

Not sure if it's too late but Rustoleum, Loctite, and others make products that not only stop or neutralize the rust process, besides products to cover to prevent additional rust.
Maybe an alternative?

Yeah, I'm going to try wire wheeling it, and spraying some rustoleum on it. I hope I don't put a hole in it though. I can't believe Ford put something this crappy on an otherwise well built truck. I'm thinking it's made from recycled scrap metal.

I'd try a rust converter before I hit it with a wire wheel. POR15 comes to mind. Converts rust to metal and stops it dead in its tracks.

Absolutely! Rustoleum is a fish oil based product which will help to prevent or reduce more oxidation but you really need to hit it with neutralizer to stop the oxidation first, as discussed earlier.

My pan was rusted through and losing roughly a gallon a week, so I replaced the pan

Changing the pan sucks, cost me less than $200 though. $80 for the pan, $20 for the pan gasket and oring for the tube, and new oil and filter.

Here's what I did (4 hrs work time)

I pulled the shroud over the fan (says powerstroke on it)
Undid the Vband on the turbo
Loosened the motor mounts almost all the way
Jacked up on the harmonic balancer (used a 2x4 on the jack for extra height)
Unbolted all the pan bolts (wobbler on a 1/4" ratchet was my friend)
Reached in pan and unbolted pickup tube
Wrestled old pan out
Replaced gasket
Wrestled new pan in
Wiggled pickup tube into place and bolted down
Fought the bolts back in
Slowly lowered back down (making sure everything was clear)
Tightened mount bolts
Reattached exhaust at turbo
Reattached shroud
Replace filter
Fill with oil
Drink a beer or 6

The Ford oil pans are a known problem.

When I replaced my engine I noticed the same thing on my '05. What was more concerning was there was just as much rust on the inside as there was on the outside. How does an oil pan rust from the inside ?? Not like it ever sat empty without any oil in it.

One shop near hear was doing one a month. Not sure if it is worse in areas where they use road salt. I was able to salvage mine, got it sandblasted and epoxy coated. At the time a new pan from Tousley was $200+.

Heard of some guys using JB Weld to keep it together.

This shouldn't suprise you ford oil pans have been a week point since the late 70's. You would think they could get it right by now. Our oil pans are double walled. When the outer layer rusts out moisture gets between the layers and rusts out the inner layer as well. If you live in the northern areas where they salt the roads if you own the truck long enough you'll need one.

Man I'm glad I don't live in an area they salt the roads. I've never heard of an oil pan rusting out.
I still have the original oil pan for my '77 Ford, rust free for 35 years.

POR15 can be found at NAPA or your local automotive paint store. You buy it in quart size containers. Application can be brushed or thinned and sprayed.
