Is there a way to tell which rear end I have ? 1982 F 150 inline 6 . 4 wheel drive . 4 speed manual . GVWR 5700 . front 2800 . rear 3166 . Manufactured 11/81 , Canada . There is a metal tag on the axle , but it's so rusted , I can't even feel the numbers on it . The parts guy said it's either a Ford 9" or a Dana 44 . ( according to his computer in the store ) The Haynes manual says it could be one of 4 different ones .
It could be the Ford 9 inch or the Ford 8.8. No Dana 44, that's in the front.
If you look at the back of the rearend and it's totally smooth except maybe a fill plug, then you have a 9 inch. If you look at the back of the rearend and it has a thin cover with bolts going all the way around, then you have the 8.8.
Look at the tag on the driver's side door jamb. Read the code and we can possibly tell you what ratio you have also.
