96 626/96 Explorer Keyless Remote
Here's the thing. I have a 1996 Mazda 626 and on my remote there is no panic button. Now, a friend of mine just bought a 1996 Limited Edition Explorer. I just happen to notice that her remote is exactly like mine except she has a panic button where my trunk button is. I checked the numbers on the back and they match almost exactly except for 1 or 2 numbers of the ISC.
I really, really want a remote with a panic button but I can't seem to find one made by Mazda. So, I am hoping that I can use a Ford remote. Now, I know Mazda and Ford did their thing together - My friends' 96 Probe and 96 Explorer have a lot in common with my 626 and all our remotes look exactly the same.
So, could I program a 1996 Explorer Remote to work with my 96 626? I would try to see if it works myself but, if it doesn't I would not know how to reprogram their remotes for their vehicles.
I called my dealership about this and they knew exactly Zilch about the whole remote thing.
If this is not relevant to this board than I am sorry.
Oh yeah, the remotes are OEM Factory Originals.
Thankies
Nana

The 1996 Probe had a panic button on the remote and up to 4 remotes could be programmed to work.
You could maybe try the Probe programming procedure and see if it works. Or maybe call a Spazda dealer and see if they have any ideas.
Here is what the manual says about programming the remotes on a 96 Probe..........
Programming, Electronic Door Lock Control Processor
Each electronic door lock control system operates on its own Transmitter Identification Code (TIC). If additional keyless entry remote transmitters (15K601) are utilized, each new TIC needs to be programmed into the electronic door lock control processor.
When programming a new TIC into the electronic door lock control processor, the TIC of the existing keyless entry remote transmitter is erased. Therefore, both the new and the existing TIC must be programmed into the electronic door lock control processor at the same time. If the programming mode is entered and the keyless entry remote transmitters are not programmed at the same time, they will not operate with the system.
The electronic door lock control processor will accept up to four keyless entry remote transmitters. If the programming of a fifth keyless entry remote transmitter is attempted, the electronic door lock control processor will ignore it.
Each TIC can be programmed into the electronic door lock control processor by performing the following procedure:
Remove the RHluggage compartment side cover (45422). Refer to Section 01-05 for the removal procedure.
Turn the ignition switch (11572) to the ON or ACC position.
NOTE: Do not disconnect any electrical connectors on the electronic door lock control processor. The program connector can be identified by the wire colors named in the following illustration, and is not plugged into any harness or component.
Using a jumper wire, connect the two program inputs together momentarily. After connecting the two program inputs, the electronic door lock control processor will lock and unlock the front doors (20124) to indicate it is ready to accept a new TIC.
Press either the LOCK or UNLOCK button on each keyless entry remote transmitter to store the TIC into the electronic door lock control processor memory.
To indicate it has accepted a new TIC, the electronic door lock control processor will lock and unlock thefront doors after each transmitter is programmed.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
To indicate it has stored the new TIC into its memory, the electronic door lock control processor will lock and unlock the front doors again when the key is turned OFF.
Install the RH luggage compartment side cover. Refer to Section 01-05 for the installation procedure.
Dialtone: I did go and try what you suggested but no go. I have seperate lock and unlock buttons so maybe that is why. I never even though of trying that though...lol. Thanks
Racerguy: Yeah, the name does throw some people off. As for those instructions, they are way different from my 626 so I now know that the 96 Probe is not an option. I did call the Mazda Dealership but they couldn't answer. I even called the Ford Dealership and the guy told me he didn't know and that no one else at the Dealership knew either.
So, oh well. Thanks for trying to help me out guys.
