My 2001 Diesel Excursion was stalling at idle (either at a stop or <5mph). It did this a couple dozen times at random. Since the warranty is expiring soon, I took it to the dealer last week. They said "no codes, so no problem."
The plot thickens -- After the dealer, I was driving and the accelerator stopped working. Pressed it to the floor and nothing. Crawled along at idle for 30 seconds. I stuck it in Neutral, revved, and it was fine. Then I took it on a trip. It did the idle stall, but also a stall in freeway traffic. Fast lane doing 70 and it stopped. Tach showed 0 rpms. In two seconds, it restarted on it's own. Made me feel warm and fuzzy. Also, there are occasional 'misses' while cruising. Tach dips and recovers immediately.
Any thoughts? I have seen the threads on the CMP sensor and wonder if this could be it. Thanks for any ideas.
be sure your dealer writes up your complaints so that once your warranty expires you can have a claim for a pre-existing condition when you find out what the problem is.
I had a problem similar to this on a GM product many years ago. After many months of frustration and threats to the dealer, they hooked up some type of gizmo to the computer, told me to drive the car and when it stalled or died, push a button on the gizmo and it would take a reading off the computer. Well, I left the dealership, it did it 5 times on the way home and I went right back. Turned out to be something bad with the ignition, kept cutting out. They replaced the ignition module and never had a problem again. Worth a try.
I have a 2002 F-250 that had a dead accelerator (throttle position sensor) and had it replaced 3 times. In the end it was just a bad wiring connection to the sensor. If it completely dies, it could be a camshaft position sensor, but you say they checked for codes and couldn't find one which is odd. hope these possibilities help.
Hi< I have a 2000 limited 7.3 psd that has started stalling at first just at idle but than while driving and how it has intermittent hard or no start (cranks fine but will not run) I leave it sit with the key on a few minutes and than it starts. I tried to down load trouble codes with my autoxray scan tool with no trouble codes stored. 45500 miles can not find a pattern to the events, such aqs temp, speed, rpm, etc. changed the fuel filter, no change.
feels like it is electrical like the key has been turned off.
p.s. it's hard to steer without the engine running. HELP?
Check to see if air is getting into fuel system. Had a problem with stalling and loss of power, turned out that air was getting into fuel filter assembly.
Buford (et all),
How come your close to the end of the warantee - isn't the powerplan waranted for 5/100K? I would think that if the engine don't run - then there is a problem.
Not to diminish the need for getting it documented with the dealer...
I hope this didn't happen after a refueling.
I asssume that you have checked filters and connections for tightness, air in the fuel system can be a real pain.
Yes I have changed the fuel filter and it seemed to have no efect on the problem. Last summer I flushed and changed the trans fluid and added an external spin on filter for the trans also. and have only put on about 10,000 miles since. this problem has so far only happened in the warm weather.
Resolution: I returned the truck and they were able to get some codes. They replaced the Crankshaft Sensor and the Throttle Position Sensor. Seems to run fine. After hearing of so many issues with the CMD, I am suspicious that is problematic also.
I identified this before 36k and got two different people to assure me that the warranty would cover it. They still tried to waffle and wanted to charge me $100 under the diesel coverage.
