cam swap ideas?

Have a stock 460 that is going to have the heads pulled off soon. To put new valves and springs... was wondering what kind of gains could I get swapping the cam as well leaving everything else stock. 88 7.5. Talking to a first timer so don't be over technical please.

The bottleneck are the heads...Great reading here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ts-are-in.html

There is also a dedicated Big Block 385 Series Forum further down on the front page: Big Block V8 - 385 Series (6.1/370, 7.0/429, 7.5/460) - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

At the very least you should consider headers before ever thinking of a cam or head swap.

The real HP improvements are in the cylinder heads. But you will gain some HP with a cam change but don't expect miracles.

While most folks buy cams from the guys who advertising budget is huge I prefer to deal with smaller cam outfits who can grind a custom made grind for your application. Better cores… personal service.

My suggestion would be to call Mike @ www.jonecams.com or Charles @ Automotive Performance Camshaft Production Manufacturer | Camcraft Performance Cams. Ask about installing the cam advanced… that may help.

EFI 460s did not have the timing chain set to 4-8 retarded, they were straight up. +2 on the custom cam recommendation if you do not have the coin for reworked heads.

Yea I'm wanting to keep stock heads and just replace springs valves and and maybe beefier cam since it's already tore apart...
