Looking at 2010 - 2012 Expeditions....quick help

So my F250 is running great and is our tow pig for our horse trailer so that is staying with me, however we also have a 2001 Tundra which has more new parts on it than old and is running great, however I'm thinking of retiring it to a pure hunting rig at my cabin in the next year or so and I'm thinking about a used 2010-2012 (no real reason on that year range) Expedition.

We've been taking longer road trips hunting with the dogs and I like the ability to know they are secure in the crates in an SUV vs. under my cap in the back of my truck. Plus I find it much more secure for guns and hunting gear etc. Add to that a decade worth of improved tech and comfort which is nice when driving 30 hours in 2 days etc.

What should I look out for in buying used with these rigs? I'm just starting my eduction on these now and if it were a 7.3L I would at least know what to look for, with these...not so much.

My buddy picked up a nice clean 2005 Expy and aside from some known sensor issues has been happy.....ball joints too....I know about the 5.4L plug challenges as well....was that ever addressed in newer 5.4L?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks

Steve

If I am not mistaken, 2010 is when Ford switched to a 6-speed tranny in an effort to gain fuel economy. We bought a used 2010 Limited with 111,000 on it in early July. We've since put 4,000 miles on it and it has done really well on gas. Some highway trips I get 18-19 MPG if I go easy. I *think* ours has a 3.50 rear end (or whatever their really tall gear is).

As to what to look for, I can't be much help there. I think the motor is pretty much a known quantity. Transmissions from 2010 would probably be the logical weak point if it is a new design, but don't take that to mean that I know they are prone to problems. I know with ours we do have some hesitation on part throttle acceleration but I have not dug into that fully. I see some guys saying that changing the fluid will help or cure that.

So, good luck. I don't see any huge problems on this board other than the spark plugs.

Thanks for the reply; interesting tidbit on the 6sp tranny....thanks.

The thing that is killing me right now is that the Tahoe gets very strong reviews and it is hard to ignore that. I've never been a GM guy and I would prefer a Expy overall but I think we'll head out at some point and drive both and who knows we may love one or hate one and the decision becomes easier.

I think I have ruled out the Sequoia at this point, not that I dislike Toyota, they have done well by me and we also have a 2013 RAV4 as a daily driver. The Sequoia seems overpriced for what you get and has pretty ****ty mileage.....

How's the wind noise on the highway in the Expy?

I have '10 and '12 Limiteds, my 4th and 5th Expeditions. They are essentially the same except for the wheels. The engine and tranny are both durable assuming they have been maintained. The 6 speed tranny debuted in 2007, not 2010.

They changed from the high thread plugs to a standard design in mid year 08. So if you go with a 09+ you won't need to deal with the pain in the *** plugs.

Motortrend is doing their SUV OTY testing and put up the 2015 expy el overview. In it they give A quick comparo to the sub. Maybe thatll help with your decision.

Except for the fact that he is looking for 2010-2012 Expeditions. The reviews he is looking for are 3 or 4 years old. I never understood the draw of the Chevy, up until recently you couldn't have a fold flat third row seat. Ford has had that since 2003. I found most everything about the Ford more appealing and at a better price.

My wife and I purchased an 07 Expy in 09 and loved it until we bought our travel trailer and needed more grunt to pull it through the mountains. They are very nice vehicles and I test drove a few Suburbans and Tahoes....they just didn't seem to ride as nice as the Expy. We would definitely still have it if we didn't need a more powerful tow pig.

Again thanks for the responses; I am looking at the 2010-2012s as there is no way I'm paying $50K+ for a vehicle unless there is $20K in cash in the glove box......

I'm keeping our diesel F250 in my signature as my tow pig so I'm not worried about towing with the Expy at all, maybe just snowmobiles etc. which is a non-event with anything north of a Smart Car.

The reviews are indeed the initial reviews and JD power pieces from when the rigs were newer.....

Plenty of nice Expeditions in that date range with 50K-ish miles for mid $20Ks which would work fine. I love the fold flat seats as a 3rd row is useless to us as we ahve no kids but 3 dogs and a horse.... I would actually probably have the middle row folded down or half folded down during hunting season for the 3rd crate anyways (I run all 3 dogs). Do the models with the captains chairs in the second row fold flat or not?

Thanks again for the information.....searches only get you so far.

I did what I hate seeing on boards - giving answers I thought I knew but didn't really. Sorry about that.

As for the wind noise - Granted this is coming from a gut that regularly drives a 2008 Ram 1500 2WD company truck back and forth to work 70 miles each day - all interstate - the Expy is a dream. Much quieter than my work truck, but I think objectively it is really quiet in its own right. I can listen to the radio at really low levels while my wife does what she usually does while I'm driving: sleep.

My dad has owned Suburbans since 1997 and he has always liked them. Me - I've always been a Ford guy. But it seems to me that GM keeps the aftermarket head light/DRL lamp companies in business. I almost never see a GM truck/SUV with both lights on. (sorry for the superfluous aside)

Looks like it might be a winner

Thanks for the rear view pic, it's worth a thousand words.....lol

And thanks for the wind noise response; I ask because we routinely (ie. every weekend) drive 3.5hrs to our cabin in VT and a truck/vehicle that starts off "meh" with wind noise at 2-4 years old becomes a howling beast at 10 years old and we tend to drive our vehicles into the ground.

My last real concern is about light off road capability...... I am making the assumption that since the Expy is based on the F150 platform that it is relatively similar in stock capability as I see the ground clearance is basically the same and depending on tire choice I believe it will be fine for logging roads, baby head sized rocks and some mud puddle crossings......make sense?

Am I overlooking anything besides the fact that it isn't a Jeep?

I saw a nice clean 2011 XLT with leather etc. with 45K miles for roughly $25K listed and it seems like something I'd be interested in.

The Expy and the F150 share a lot, but they don't share suspensions. The Expedition went to an independent rear suspension in 2003, the F150 uses a solid axle. Light off road shouldn't be an issue. I think in the fold flat picture, those seats aren't folded all the way to cargo mode, but I could be mistaken. The latch you see in the back of the seat should drop the bottom cushion to the floor. Hard to tell from the pic.

Fantastic point about the IRS......forgot that it doesn't share the solid axle, nor should it as an SUV.....but that is a decent difference. Not one that I think will hurt the light off road capabilities......which is good..
