Welcome to FTE.
Feel free to voice an opinion. Just add "imo" or "jmo" or "imbfos" and a little smiley to your post, and you'll get on just fine.
So, is that manure spreader green* thing your working truck?
How long have you had it? Got any details on power and other running gear? Any issues with it?
IF you want to post your VIN and warranty plate/sticker info, you can get a full decode. Might take a day or more, but it's done regularly.
*jmo,
See, it's not all serious here at all.....

thankyou. i just got it a few months ago. trying to get it safe and ready for daily use. vinR80DV9J8978 it has a reman by Alliance lots of numbers on engine tag but it has a 3208 i would say almost no hours on the reman 5 8 D 4 D 2 1 0 maybe thats the one? its N/A and has a 5+2 excellent condition. I bought it out of state so i could start with a truck that never saw roadsalt. rate now my biggest concern is the excessive play in steering box/pitman arm looking for a rebuild kit or rebuilt one. ive had some trouble finding parts but am almost there. many things from ebay thanks to all for any pointers

R80 = LN800 Diesel.
D = Caterpillar V225 - 3208 636 cid V8 Diesel.
V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.
9?J8978 = The 9 is incorrect, has to be a letter. Two letters followed by 4 numbers indicates a 1978 or 1979.
1978 serial number range: AA5,001-CJ5,000 / 1979 serial number range: DC0,001-FK9,999.
Does the truck have M/S or P/S? I also need to know the weight capacity of the front axle to figure out which M/S or P/S gearbox it has.
Post all the codes stamped on the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.

HI. no its is a single unit and the play is isolated to the box, when rotating the wheel back and forth i can see the arm slopping around in its bushing/bearing? maybe its rebuildable? iv found a couple in the 1000 dollar range but id rather save money if possible. rate now im at about 5200 for purchase, driving home, sales tax, parts, ect. which is really good but i would like to stay under 7500. thanks again

R808 = LN800 Diesel, 35,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
What the heck is 8E8AS? You jumbled the BODY - TRANS - AXLE codes together, I cannot figure out which is which.
Look at the pic of the Warranty Plate in post 5 for the sequence of the 2nd line after TYPE/GVW (MODEL) code.

IMO, you should get your present P/S gearbox and pump rebuilt. The only source that I know of that can do it properly is Red Head Steering Gears (redheadsteeringgears.com) located in Seattle WA
But, before you contact them, contact Job Lot Automotive (joblotauto.com - 718-468-8585) located in Queens NY
Job Lot specializes in NOS obsolete Ford BIG truck parts, may know of a good rebuilder closer to Otsego.

thankyou so much! but its hard to believe that somthing off a truck that had a couple million brothers would be obsolete. that would be my luck. my hood says l8000 is it a 8000 or 800? heres a funny story for you. when i first got it i ripped everything out of the cab. took a half 5 gallon bucket off tar and dumped in two gallons of 5o year old gear oil. mixed it with a paint mixer and swabed the whole cab. that was a big mistake! ive since moved one and beyond but at least the cab will never rust out!
