I just bought a 97 f-250 7.3 with 220k miles. It has new injectors that are all working but are split shots. It starts up and idles just fine. But on start up it blows a lot of white smoke until it gets warm. It also runs like crap while driving if it's cold. Also when I rev it up it blows white smoke. And when in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear and i step on the throttle and get up to around 3000 rpm it hicupps or bucks for just a split second. Running down the highway anywhere over 80 it does this noticeably more. Could this be because of having split shot injectors? I'm stumped iv tried many different things and can't find my problem. Changed oil, fuel filter, had buzz test, cylinder contribution test and everything checked out good. Please help me!
Unless its a California model, you have the wrong injectors. You might be able to get a custom programmed chip to compensate but i would suggest to put your old injectors back in.
The guy would had it before me I guess. I just found out they were split shots when I popped the valve covers. They are dated 12/13 too so they are pretty new it would suck to buy new single shot injectors.
Does it have a chip? If you don't know pull the ebrake loose and look behind it. That's where the pcm is.
I checked that last night. Pulled the e brake and then took the little black cover off the computer and did not see a chip in there. But am I supposed to take the pcm all the way out to check?
No, if the cover was on it there is no chip. The easiest way for you would be to get a chip to run them. Contact PHP, DP tuner, etc. You can do a search for different tuners, there are a lot of them.
You may have other problems, like glow plugs for some of the white smoke, but until you have programming to run the splits or change them to singles I'm kinda guessing.
The truck starts up right away so I don't think it's my glow plugs. I just don't know why it would white smoke a bunch when I rev it? Is that the injectors. I just hate to pay 400 something dollars to get a chip and that not be what's wrong with it.

BTW thanks for the welcome and from all the help so far from everybody. It means a lot! Iv learned everything from these forums so far.
The white smoke is unburnt fuel. It could very well all be from the wrong programming to run the split shot injectors. I'm not wanting to spend your money either, throwing parts at something is not the way to fix it. However this is pretty much already diagnosed, so that is the next step. Call one of them companies and talk to them. That won't cost you anything.

I called several but they are closed for the weekend. Iv heard a lot of good things about the ts 6 with tony wildmann tunes. I found it for 425. Any other recommendations? Also I have 4 inch straight pipe to 6 inch tip and a napa 6637 air filter but still have stock downpipe. Will I need to put a bigger downpipe on?
It's ALWAYS better to get rid of that pos stock downpipe. Tony Wildman does have good tunes, but you need to talk to them and explain you have splits so you get the right tunes, and don't get a chip that is for singles.

Who put split shots in?
Richard
Lets get down to the issue. Do you have the wrong injectors installed or not? Do you have a Cali truck manufactured for that state? If so then the injectors are correct, if not then the injectors won't work good with the 48 state PCM, unless the PCM was changed, re-flashed, programmer, etc .. , then it becomes more complex.
Just talked with somebody from total diesel performance. He said that even though the injectors are split shot, the truck is only getting a single shot because that is what it calls for. He said he didn't think a custom chip would fix the problem.
