Steering Gear

Has anyone replaced the steering gear on their truck? I took it to a mechanic (not the Ford dealer) and he says there is way too much play in the steering gear and wants to replace the steering gear. He quoted me a price of $1050 but this was with a Ford steering gear.

Does anyone have experience with a different steering gear? Cardone has a video

. It is remanufactured with aftermarket design. Anyone have good things to say about Cardone? It cost anywhere between $300 and $400 and I think I could replace it myself.

Got my box out of Washington state, name of company name was Red something. When mine went out ford did not have a supplier, Was told that by Bondy Ford of Dothan Al.
