I have a 99 Expy that has developed a squeal like metal on metal, in the front end it sounds like its coming from the right front. this only happens between 2000 and 3000 RPM. I've looked at the rotors but haven't pulled the pads off. The rotors look good no gouges, and I replaced the pads about 5000 miles ago and they look good. Could this be a drive line problem? I have been under it and can't find anything loose or badly worn. I am a novice mecanic, I know just enough to get me in trouble. any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Pulleys are not somthing I had really looked at because (I forgot to say this) it only happens when your moving but thanks it won't hurt anything to make sure they aren't binding up. I have greased everything I can find under the truck so I'll just keep greasing it up. thanks any other idea's Im open to all suggestions.
So when does it happen? Braking, accelerating, weaving side to side, all the time or intermittent? Does it make the same noise if you're in neutral revving the engine or accelerating?
OK, as I said it happens between 2000 and 3000 RPM, only when accelerating, no noise when I'm revving the engine, (5.4 still comes on strong!) there is no noise when turning, it sounds like the noise is coming from the front right. My son told me it started all the sudden (he was driving it till he could get a new car) he said he hadn't ran over or into anything that would hurt it and I know he didn't go 4x4ing with it he doesn't like going down a dirt road. So I am ready to listen to and advice or suggestions. Thanks
Hi I've checked the pulleys and they seem OK. I did notice the front right tire was wearing pretty bad, so I rotated tires and now the squeal is gone. what could be making the squeal when the tire is wearing down like that?
That's odd. If the noise only happened at certain RPM accelerating it would have to be something that changed speed with the engine RPM. Tires, brakes, etc. would be speed dependent and would make a noise regardless of engine speed. If the tire is wearing badly probably needs a front end alignment. Have the front end checked out while having that done. Is anything close enough to the wheel to touch? Brake shield not bent or anything? Checked the motor mounts, trans mount, etc?
I have checked everything I feel comfortable doing. As soon as I can save for it I will have it alignment done hopefully before it wears this tire down. Thanks guys for the advice I will let you know what happends when I get it alignment done.
I'm not sure if the 99 has it but the automatic tensioner on the serpentine belt was fubar'd on mine and made a squeel. It may not be obvious until you take a 1/2" johnson bar to release belt tension and free wheel it. Mine still turned but had no ***** left in the bearing!
thank you, its something else to check. if I can leave it parked for awhile I would like to just rebuild the front end. but I hope I can get this figured out with out it costing an arm and leg. keep em coming I check out everything I can.
If you don't have the right tool it's really difficult to get the belt off. I tried using a breaker bar and it wouldn't really work- kept hitting the fan. Had to buy one of these tools.
