Hi everyone! I just bought a '62 292 c.i. today. It has a 4-speed tranny & posi rearend, but I have to get back with the previous owner about all the changes he's made over the years. His grandfather bought it new - been in the family until today. I'll probably have fourty-eleven questions, and have been lurking around. Just wondering if there are any major differences in the unibodies, as far as parts interchangeabilty. I know of a couple in wrecking yards that may be possible doners for various things. The main problems are turn signal switch missing, distributer is 180 degrees backwards (he says) and the charging system won't charge the battery. The starter may be hanging up in the flywheel also, but we were trying to turn the engine over with a pretty dead battery, charger, and finally swapping in a good battery. Starter really clunked hard a couple times. It tried to run, but I'm not so sure it was a good idea to do that with the distributer. The truck is really straight, but small signs of rust are coming thru the doors and front fenders. It should be a good project - I hope. Been thru this with a '66 Econoline van several years ago.
The only differences among the 3 years of unibodies is the grill. Everything else is the same. You should be able to get one from a parts store. Charging system can be checked out at almost any place that sells and installs batteries. Get a good manual for the truck in the tune-up section it should give a drawing of where #1 on the distributor is and a firing order. If you need help getting the distributor squared away post back. It requires some thought on how to explain the process in writing. Don't worry about hurting the engine if it is wrong the worst that could happen is a backfire, just keep some baking soda handy if it really flames up. Good Luck Rich.
Cool! I'll try'n do the picture thing when I figure out how to post them. Should get the truck tomorrow morning and start tearing into it. Saw some flames the other day - really got our attention! Thanks guys!
I'm awfully concerned about the sounds that starter is making and believe me, the starter isn't the source of my concerns. BTW: GM vehicles have Posi (as in Positraction), Fords have Equa-loc. The little things make all the difference.
Yeah, I was thinkin' bent flywheel or broken teeth. I was under the truck last evening and noticed no plate covering the bottom, but I was more interested in looking around under the truck to see what all is going on under there. Also found out why I couldn't find the E-brake handle - the cable has been cut from the floor, and cut at the rear, presumabely during the rear end swap. Why do people do things like that? So guess what I'm looking for. Equi-lock? Hummm that's a new one to me - should've know that. Put a full charge on my battery last night and will try to crank the engine over and hope things go over a little better - that is if it cools down below 98 degrees sometime today. Thanks
