I read your post and figured I'd sound off on your post instead of starting a new thread.
It looks like you and my cousin (more like brother), up in Indiana have the same problem. His 2008 6.4 (a little over 100,000 miles) was white smoking badly.....the dealer got him for almost $4000. They replaced both EGR coolers, and did some other small work he requested.....he got the truck back and they said it will continue to smoke till the DPF burns out the coolant in it. We took it for about a 30 mile drive and cleared up. The NEXT day it started smoking white smoke again....only WORSE!! He got pulled over by State Police, and while talking to him....the truck shut off.
It was towed back to the dealer.....and after 3 days, he was told it COULD be one of the turbos, or he may have burned a hole in a piston or cylinder wall!!!

WHAT?????!!!!

UMMM....after $4000.....they should be telling him what IS wrong instead of guessing what might be wrong???!!! I mean...this is a Ford dealer telling him this!!!! Then they have the gall to tell him it's $4500 for the turbo or "roughly" $9500 for a piston or cylinder...(depending on what it is exactly!)

studdard......I sincerely hope you have better luck than my cousin is having right now!!

Water pump housing issues are somewhat common on the 6.4 see utube for info on the 6.4L Usually when dealer changes parts that don't fix the problem they say ooop's. Bad diagnosis you shouldn't have to pay for work that was done by mistake. Or parts..GGGRRR. See powerstroke help on you tube.

Not all dealerships have highly competent diesel mechanics. Just because they are a Ford shop does not mean that they are going to be able to fix your truck difinitively. It sounds like, in both cases, that they are stabbing around hoping to hit something. I'd start doing some homework and see who is competent in your region.

Question for you though? Since the trucks are out of warranty. Why not take them to the Big Rig Ford dealers. Your going to pay for the service. Diesel is Diesel and those guys would have a completely better understanding of what is happening. I would think most major cities have a big truck dealer that you could go to. The car dealers are selling gas for the sales. So they will employ gas techs. A few of the better ones will have a Diesel tech. But how good is the training of them. Just makes sense to me to go to the shops that can do the work right the first time.

some pretty hefty prices just to go down the trouble shooting chart sequentially.

so white smoke in exhaust....how is the coolant getting into the combustion chamber...not buying the hole in piston theory....smoke would be black....my guess and that is what your dealership is doing is a head gasket.

I told him last night that he needs to tell the dealer show him the bad EGR coolers, (both).....hopefully it's not too late. I personally don't think it would be a hole in the piston either. My thing is.....they are guessing!!! I wrote service in the past at multiple dealerships and I would have been fired for doing something like that!! I'm just trying to help him as much as I can, but I'm back in Florida now.

I agree. Maybe a crack in the cylinder wall? I'm not familiar with a 6.4, but I'm fairly certain a piston isn't the barrier between coolant and the CC

Only smokes under tow.....

Sounds like head gaskets to me. Pulling the heads are a good idea to check the cylinder walls.

The bottom egr is common for this problem which I think they replaced. I do believe there is a check procedure to verify the cooler.

Good Luck.

I'd put it back together and take a trip to see Dr. Vloney myself.

Too many ways for coolant leaks.

Talked to my cousin up in Indy the other night. He's got his truck back. Smokes white smoke and oil coming from the tailpipe. He's just about done with the whole Ford 6.4 thing. Ford won't step up, (truck only has 113K on it). Dealer took his $4000 so they say they want more $$$ to further diagnose the truck. He's looking at a gas truck again....Dodge, GMC or Chevy. He wants nothing to do with Ford again.
