Just got back from a short ride around town get home and i notice my 6.9 making a loud thumping noise. ive never heard this noise before and im flipping out about it. checked my oil and it wasnt touching the stick and im scared ive done ruined the motor, poured oil in it fired it back up and it still makes the noise. What is it?
Get a real oil pressure gauge from the store and pipe it in. See what oil pressure you are running. You can also take two wrenches, and as the engine is running loosen each injector one at a time till they leak a little bit, and see if the engine rpm drops. Do each one individually, and if you find one that doesn't make the engine run any different, that cylinder is dead.
How long did you let it run once you re-filled the oil? I had my plastic oil gauge feed tube break and I lost all of my oil. I re-filled it but it had to run about a full minute thumping and chuffing before the hydraulic lifters filled and rebounded. If you just filled it and started it for a few seconds it may need to run a little longer to re-fill the lifters.

Is it a loud banging noise? Like really loud where it sounds like something is going to break?
Lower end noise or upper end? Could be just about anything from a spun rod bearing or broken rod to ?
My niece had a Neon that started making a loud banging sound. She thought the low oil light was just a suggestion and ran it DRY. Froze a rod bearing, bent a rod, tore up a piston and ruined the crank.
Could be a lot of things. Some diagnosis may be in order, but I'd be careful about running it in fear of more damage until you figure it out.
First thing I'd do is drain the oil and look at it and the filter. If there is metal present; bad deal..
These diesels "thump" when oil pressure gets low. It is basically from inadequate valve opening. I'm not saying there was not damage done, but the valve huffing ~usually cues the driver to shut the engine off before catastrophic siezing and breakage occurs. Remember these are high volume low pressure oiling engines, and behave a little differently when oil starved. Checking the oil and filter for metal is a good idea to assess what may have happened in there, but my guess is that the lifters are still not rebounded and that is why it is still making the noise.
me and my dad found the source of the noise that night exhaust leak on the passenger side which when i first heard the noise that was where it was the loudest havent heard the noise since then.
