'96 -'97 460 MAF ECM type

Gentlemen,

I have located (by internet) the 460 mass air intake system in a bone yard in California. The man says he also has the ecm from the same truck, but the numbers on it do not quite match what I have found is the normal unit. This, by itself, doesn't mean much as there were probably different versions of the ecm depending on the exact configuration of the truck.

The part number he gave me is F6TF-12A650-AND (code GLU3), whereas the one sure ecm I can identify for a MAF 460 is F6TF-12A650-AMD (code FEZ3).
Can anybody tell me for sure if this ecm is an original 460 MAF unit? The dealer I talked to couldn't help me because this is too "old".

This unit is OBDII and EEC-V. Were the late non-California 460s (speed density) also switched over to OBDII?

Thanks!

Non-California models with a 460 were never OBDII. CA did so for emissions.

That's the impression I've gotten from a lot of the reading I've done, but I'm paranoid I suppose.

The guy that has the ecm wants a not-cheap price for it, so I have to know what this unit's application is before doing anything.

Also, it is my understanding that all vehicles sold in the US from '96 on where required to have OBDII. Were the trucks somehow exempt from this?

Thanks for any help.

Yes. Large trucks over 8500 GVWR were exempt except for California. If the EEC he has is OBDII, you have a lot more work ok your hands than the usual MAF swap as the EEC has 120 pins instead of the normal 60 for OBDI. At that point it becomes a full harness swap from truck to truck.

96' was the first federal year for OBDII. However there were exemptions based on GVWR. An F250 or F350 with a 460 was above the line so OBDII wasnt needed. But California had more stringent standards and required it in 96 and 97.

And a few extra parts. Timing cover, knock sensor, etc.

Thank you for the posts!

So this may well be a mass-air 460 ecm. How the heck do I find any info on this thing? I can probably dig up a vehicle wiring diagram somewhere (Maybe. Any suggestions on this would be great too!) but info on this stuff is rare.

My '96 F-350 w/460 is Federal, and speed-density. I want to do the mass air conversion ultimately, but will play with the existing ecm for a while first, in order to learn a few things first. I know going to the 104 pin ecm connector and OBDII will be a major wiring job, but I've got all winter to plan it out. I believe that I can build pretty much the entire system on a table and run it as well. That would let me know that everything is good before trying to drop it on the truck's engine.

Fiveology I think is the name of a company that has kits.

You know you can use a 5.0 MAF EEC to run that engine so long as you have a tuner? That would make the swap much easier.
