^^^ This. The 8.8 and 9 inch are both good axles. That said, I've broken 3 9s but never an 8.8.

Your truck could have an 8.8" (has an inspection cover) or a 9 inch (no inspection cover).

9" used thru 1986 in F150's, 8.8's introduced in 1983, thru 1996 would be similar.

its a 8.8

the problem is replaceing the pinion bearing.

today we found out why one of the spider gears had alot of slop.its cause the thrust washer has completey broke apart.

so we are going to replace them.but we need a good write up on how to take the carrier out and how to set up the carrier once we put it back

There is no separate carrier with an 8.8 .. only the 9" has it.

8.8" pinion bearings (4621/4630) and cups (4616/4628).

It's a involved process. I just did a google search on "Ford 8.8 rebuild" and a lot of hits came up, including you tube videos. This the rearend that the mustang guys mess with, so there is a lot of info out there.

Once the 8.8's inspection cover (4036) is removed and the axles are pulled, most of the parts come out thru the back of the rear end.

Notice 4241, this is the locking pin...it has a nasty habit of shearing its head off. Getting the remains of the pin out of the 4221 shaft, can be a study in futility.

You will also have to replace the 4662 crush sleeve and the pinion seal (4676) which is accessed at the front of the rear end...once the 4851 companion flange is removed.

I suggest if you're going to make the repairs yourself, get a shop manual, because you will need it.

4204 is the carrier. I think you are referring to the third member on the 9 inch.
