Hood deflector

So, when I ordered the truck I ordered the hood deflector. It is a dealer installed item. I think it was $88. So they put it on in a mere 2 hours while I stand around. A few days later I started up the interstate to the farm and noticed daylight between the hood and deflector. Before I could get to a turn off place it was up there flopping in the breeze. The double back tape came loose. I assume they did not clean the hood where the tape goes and it did not stick. Now I have to waste more time taking it back to be reinstalled.

Anyone had problems with their deflector? Will it stay if they do it right?

To be honest I can't ever recall seeing the latest body style with a hood deflector. If you get the opportunity to snap a photo when you get it back I would sure like to see how it looks.

As for the double stick tape that most manufactures supply on such like items, it is a joke. It is usually so thin that if affords little strength, the adhesive power is there but not up to the task required to hold.

When I order anything that requires the use of a double sided adhesive tape I add to the supplied tape or replace it all together with a automotive professional grade double sided 3M tape. It holds and has never failed to do so.

Good luck on getting it fixed

I will get you a pic. The tape was actually pretty dang thick and looked like emblem tape that should work. I just don't think they cleaned first. They left hand smudge prints all over the front of the truck also. This time I plan to tell them to wipe it off after they are done drooling on it.

Well, some call them bug deflector but they really don't deflect bugs. We have so many love bugs down here and they will eat your paint. I got it to keep the love bug guts off the front edge of the hood.

Yes Sir, I have had the displeasure of dealing with "Love Bugs" and can't say that I enjoyed it one little bit!

Several trucks and many years ago I had a deflector and couldn't answer this question so I stopped adding them to my new trucks. I think this is a good question.

You may not need one in your state. Down here the Love Bug guts will eat the paint right off the front of your hood without one.

Ok, I went back into the dealer on Friday. They reinstalled my bug deflector with some 3M tape. Yesterday I go drive it and it looks funny. I get out and look and it has come loose in an area about 15 inches across the hood. I am about ready to just take it off and just keep the bug guts off the hood by hand. That or just buy my own and install it myself.

I would ask for my money back and go get your own...

Many have tabs that wrap around the front edge and use existing holes underneath to bolt in place...

OR, just get the protective film for the front of your truck and keep a good coat of Rejex on it... that's what we use on the rv's

My 04 did also. This hood is flush with the back of the grill. Sits down on the rubber. No way to wrap around under the hood.

Rejex is probably the way to go.

Actully a lot of study on the imfamous acrylic bug deflector and it has been reported that it docks as much as 5% of your fuel mileage at Interstate speeds. I can attest to this, on my ole 2001 F-150, I had one on there for 3 years and then took it off and I had a noticeable difference in better fuel economy on the highway as it had a 4.6l. On our diesel trucks with the pretty square front ends I don't know if there would be that much change.

Since the front of the hood is kinda tucked in behind the grill, I don't get many bugs hitting the hood. And yes, I am in Florida dealing with love bugs. They are the primary reason that I don't want painted bumpers and grills. Chrome is impervious to bug guts.

I think I will just take it off and have them refund my money and put some Rejex on it.
