I am rebuilding my 2000 E-250 5.4L into the ultimate work van and in doing so I am going to add several new gauges to it (i.e. trans temp, oil temp, oil press, water temp, etc). I would like to add an idiot light to each one and make it so that when it reaches a certain temp/press it will come on and alert me to the danger.
Is there anyone out there that can help me with this or knows if it can be done?
Any input or advice it greatly appreciated. Thank you all.
The standard way of doing it is with a separate sensor which is just an contact switch preset at a specified value. Wire that through to a light and you're good to go. The problem is mounting more sensors, finding ones that have the specific value you want, etc. but it's not expensive to do.
A more expensive, easier, and much more flexible solution is the GlowShift gauges. Their series 10 gauges allow you to program when the built in indicator lights up. You can spec high and low values. I've not used them, but they're high on my likely to use list for my gauge upgrade.
I would definitely buy the programmable gauges. It's going to be hard enough to find spots to put one probe per gauge, much less multiple probes for idiot lights and gauges.
