Motor Bracket Question For NumberDummy

My 65 F-100. I purchased a power steering box out of a 69 which is the Saginaw unit. I got the steering column also that matched and is shorter and it was from a 4 speed too boot!

Question is I found out the motor bracket that holds the motor mount which bolts to the frame and then to the cross member. the L shaped bracket. Now I found out my PS box would hit the bracket and I could only get one bolt to line up. The FTE member I purchased it from told me I had to use the bracket from a FE powered truck that originally came with Saginaw PS box. So I located a 72 that had a FE and PS at the wreckers and sure enough it was different and was a couple of inches more to the front to allow clearance for the PS box to mount.

I searched my parts books and I could not find anything other than 1 part number 6028 with no mention of different motor brackets for the Saginaw unit. No one else in the forum mentioned this mod except Rich, he knew right away what the problem was.

My truck was built in June 65 long before the Saginaw units were installed. I know the Bendix units would fit my year.

On page 5 section 60.1 illustration shows the bracket as part # 6028 like the one in my 65. I couldn't find reference to a different one on the drivers side, my books cover up to 72. The book states it it for F-100/250 65 to 72 for 6 cyl and V-8's My parts book is the January 1975 Final Issue.

It's not a big deal as I now have the correct bracket, however I cannot find any reference to a different bracket or anyone mentioning the bracket needs to be replaced in the forum.

Do you have any idea when Ford made that modification or the correct part number? Could it be 69 or newer?

I think this is something that anyone making the mod should know about.
Anyone else run into this problem?

Thank you in advance.

Are you sure the P/S box you bought from a 1969 is the Saginaw type?

Bendix P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD; 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001.

Ford/Saginaw P/S: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001; 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350.

FoMoCo anticipated the changeover to Ford/Saginaw P/S at the beginning of the 1969 model run (9/1968), changed the left engine support accordingly.

If you look in the '64/72 truck parts catalog, text section 60.7, page 4 (see below), you'll see that the FE 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350, ditto 1970/72, use a different L/support part number (C9TZ-6029-A) than 1965/68.

In 1974, Ford updated the 1969 part number to a 1974 part number.

D4TZ-6029-B (replaced C9TZ-6029-A) .. Left Engine Support (aka tower, stand, perch) / Use with or without P/S / Obsolete

Applications: 1969/76 F100/250 2WD & F350 360/390.

btw: Some members recommend getting the L/support from a 1973/76 F100/250 2WD & F350 360/390, but are unaware (no parts or O-S-I catalogs) that it's the same 1969/76.

Defiantly a Saginaw unit, year code is C9. Purchased from a trusted source from a very knowledgeable Ford Guru.

Looks like Ford updated their text references but not the illustration. I'll check that in my book, I remember seeing a reference to 6029-A.

Tomorrow I will post a photo of the PS box and the bracket along with the numbers from the PS box.

Did you ever think about publishing a book or database with all the parts that interchange? I bet it would be quite thick.

Thanks again...

Here are some photos of the Saginaw PS unit, the numbers and comparison of PS and old manual box.

The Saginaw unit and numbers C9TR-3550

Saginaw vs manual

Motor mount bracket for Saginaw PS. Note how it is bent towards the front of the frame to clear the larger Saginaw box.

Motor mount bracket still in my 65 for manual steering box. Note how straight it is compared to the other mount.

I don't how many of you F-100 guys have had to remove these motor L brackets but it was fun.

I found the donor truck at pick n pull so we had to remove it ourselves my friend and I. We lucked out as the FE engine was removed and heads were gone, laying upside down with the pan off and two rod caps removed showing a nasty part of the crank. The power brake with a dual master cylinder was removed and laying in the dirt all rusty. It was from a F-250 with drum brakes.

I must thank the Ford engineers for not riveting or welding these brackets in as it would have been a lot worse to remove. As it was the 2 lower bolts and nuts were easy to get to, then the upper rear bolt and nut a little more awkward but came out OK. Now the front upper was real fun as the nut was really tight and did not want to come loose as the wrench was at a difficult angle. So what I did was have my friend push up on the bolt from underneath and I whipped out my trusty lithium ion battery powered Dremel tool with the reinforced cutter/grinder wheel and it cut that grade 5 bolt in no time.

We left pick n pull with the bracket, nuts and bolts and the proportioning valve for Rich. I also managed to snag the accessory pulley out of the FE so I could drive the PS pump.

Now the fun part, jacking up the engine and removing the motor bracket and installing the correct one then bolting that heavy monster of a Saginaw unit in place.

Power steering coming soon and I have the proper steering column also, I'm ready to go!
Thanks Rich for heading me in the right direction.

There's no reference to Saginaw P/S gearboxes in Ford car & truck parts catalogs, it's just called Ford P/S.

The box was designed/engineered by FoMoCo, built for them by Saginaw, which is a division of GM
