I have a question. I have a 1999 Expedition xlt with rear audio controls. according to the manual they are suppose to work independently. Has anyone had the same problem or can tell me how to work this darn thing. thanks ya'll
check your display on the radio, if it has a headphone symbol on it the rear controls are active. If I'm not mistaken, buttons 4 and 6 hit at the same time will turn the rear controls on and off. I hope this helps

If 4 and 6 don't work, try buttons 2 and 5........
I've got the same problem. When I plug the headphones in the rear controls, the front speakers shut off. The sould only comes fhrough the headphoes. Everything else works on the rear works, as I can control everything from the rear controls.
3 and 5 on the head unit toggles the rear audio on and off.
There should be 2 separate headphone jacks.... I believe one works with the rear controls (2nd audio) only and the other works with main... I could be mistaken as I replaced my entire system, but I seem to remember this when my son would drive me nuts playing with the controls.....
Try adjusting the settings from the rear controls once you have the headphones plugged in there are 2 settings, Dual audio and single, not sure exactly which of the buttons you push (my son always does it as I never ride in back) But your display on your Head Unit should change to reflect the mode, when in this mode mine has audio through the front speakers only and they can listen to a different audio source.
Tried using the controls every which way and the front speakers cut out everytime. All other controls worked perfectly. I keep the rear controls on all the time at the head unit, maybe that has something to do with it.
I guess I'll have to take it apart and see if something is loose.
I don't think the factory audio systems in the early model years are dual-source units. You simply have the choice of operating the system from the front or the rear, not both at the same time. Also, you can only use the speakers or headphones, not both at the same time. According to the above posts, it sounds like Ford changed the system in Y2K (maybe as an upgrade option) to be able to play separate audio sources.
