Codes 1132, 1115

Has anyone seen these OBD II codes? I had my 1998 Expedition EB 5.4L checked out after a "check engine" light appeared (and rough idling followed). I got 4 codes 171, 174, and 1132, 1115 (MAF sensor codes). I have ruled out the O2 sensor based on the MAF failure codes. I tried to clean the MAF but the light is still on and the idle is worse. I now think I should replace the MAF sensor. Can anyone confirm a similar code sequence and positive results with a MAF sensor replacement? Thanks!

Code 171 and 174 are for bank 1 and 2 running too lean. The engine has compensated as rich as it can go, and it is still to lean. This does not necessarily mean your mixture is bad, but something (a sensor) is telling the ECM to correct lean. The oxygen sensors alert the ECM to how lean/rich the exhaust is, and then the ECM trips a code. Maybe you have a bad oxy. sensor, but since there are 4 of them (2 per bank), I don't think they could all go at once. I will post what I know for code 1132, which is the same as the others. It means cylinder bank 1 (Drivers' side) is correcting lean for an overly rich condition.
Code 1115, is a mystery, the manual shows nothing with that code number for the powertrain (or "P" codes). It does, however, show an 1115 as a ABS code for an internal power failure. Read the codes again, maybe there was an error. Let me know.....

Maybe the code was 1151. I cleaned the MAF sensor but still get the rough idle. Reset "check engine" which hasn't come back on yet. The 1132 and 1151 codes also flashed something like "mass air flow" in the display. The O2 sensor could be bad but both at the same time and the other codes told me to focus on the MAF.

Any ideas? I want to be sure before I buy the MAF

Are there any other symptoms besides the rough idle ? Do you smell a strong odor of gasoline in your exhaust ? Any smoke ? If so, what color ? You could have a fuel injector stuck open, and it is pouring gas into a cylinder. This would trip a code, but you would smell gas in the exhaust, and contaminate the engine oil. The first thing I would check is the infamous PCV valve hose. Many users here have had similar problems, and this was the culpreat. Trace your PCV valve lines back to the intake manifold. The PCV valve is on the pass. side vavle cover. One of the plastic lines runs behind the Throttle body, and connects to the intake. this connection is out of eyesight, and is the weak link. There is a small rubber elbow that is exposed to alot of heat, and, over time, deteriorates. It usually cracks or splits open. You have to work by feel, but stick your hand behind the motor, and trace the line to the elbow in question. Once found, squeeze it, and you will see what I mean. The replacement part is relatively cheap, so give this a try !!

No odor or smoke that I can tell. The idle is now a steady pulse but the engine runs and drives OK at higher RPM's. I checked the PVC at the valve cover and it had suction...but I didn't check the rear connection at the elbow. I'll give this a try tonight.

After I cleaned the MAF Sensor and pulled the neg battery cable for a few minutes, the "Check Engine" light hasn't come back on yet (?). Still have the pulsing idle though.

Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it works out.

Yup. You were right....faulty PVC elbow at the rear of the intake. Put duct tape on it for tonight until I can replace the part. Thanks for your input. This forum is awesome!
