I am a novice at diagnosing and fixing autos, but would like to begin to know a little more about vehicles. With that said, I recently bought an 01 Expedition XLT, after a few hundred miles, the dashboard gauges occasionally would go crazy. They will bounce from 0 to max value for a while (anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes) and then start operating normally again. This has happened on start-up, after I have been driving for 30 minutes or more or anywhere in between. Any ideas on what can be the problem.

Voltage regulator in the alternator is bad. The alternator still charges and that is why it passed testing. Sjmcenit only does it occasionally it doesn't show up on a 2 minute test. I would check all ground and positive connections(big connections) and load test battery itself and if all gauges still do it it's a bad alternator voltage regulator. Replace alternator. Db electrical has good prices online. Napa lifetimes are great if keeping for a while
