i had to replace the radiator during the 4th of july weekend before towing the boat. well with everything out of the way i decided to change belts and the alternator. i found a 100 amp at the pick a part from a 85 lincoln with a serpintine belt, $25.00 went to an local auto parts store and they sold me a pulley and mounted it for me, $7.00 buck all the bolts holes line with my old 55 amp. i also took the plug for the alternator too. bolted it up soldered the wires together on to the old wires so that i have 2 options for connecting the old setup if ever needed. and now the volt meter show 14+ volts all the time and the 2 batterys stay fully charged and the lights dont dim even with everything turned on. it was so easy. i even used the standard size belt for it. i say that we should switch up to this setup.:-X04
Sounds like a good idea. What model lincoln did it come out of?
Could you have taken your old pulley and put it on the lincoln alt.? Or did you have to buy a different pulley.
I am not sure about the year 100% but it was about 1986 -1989 lincoln towncar fullsize. and i always try to solder things together when its possible to reach. i dont trust terminal crimps. on the pulley i want to keep the old one intact just in case the upgrade went bad. the part number on the alternator was 73031. that will interchang ewith any autoparts store number. the reason i bought the used alternator was because it looked like it had been just installed it wasn't even dirty except for some fingerprints. and the tag from the rebuilder was clean, thats how i know the part number. it was a proparts rebuild.
Was it an internal or external regulator alternator? Since you just had to wire it in I would assume an external regulator. I don't know what year they started with the internal regulators.
Was the wiring the same as your truck? I got a 100 amp from a junkyard, but the wiring si different. it has a wire to the battery, a ground, then a harness wiht a green and a white wire. Says on alt FLD, and STA below it. Of course now I see its from a 87 Taurus. In my Haynes manual, the diagram for the alt has 5 wires running to the starter relay, and one to the instr. cluster. Shoudl I attempt to wire it up, or just get a Linc. Towncar alt from Pep Boys?
i dont know how the taurus is wired up, like i put in my post that i used one from a v-8 lincoln and i cut the plug off with the alternator. it is a very simple conversion if you use the set-up that i went with. put then you can do anything for your self if you have the know how and diagrams to back you up.
one more thing, it sounds like you have an alternator with a built in regulator not an external type. just thought i menteoned that for you to check into.
This idea sounds good to me. I have to ask a few more questions. Since cars are low mount and trucks are high mount (cars have a top bolt pivot and trucks have a lower bolt pivot) didn't you have to rotate the alternator from a car 180 degrees to mount in a truck. How did you solve the wiring harness relocation? I remember a particular car I had installed the alternator from a truck onto and it mounted about 180 degrees off. The wiring wasn't pretty going over the top instead of the bottom. Can the back of the alternator from a car be switched around to solve this problem or are Lincoln alternators setup like trucks?
