Code Name: Resurrection - timeline 2 years

Project Resurrection,

Desired end result is a camper carrying, trailer towing F250 that is reliable, safe and of course looks good!

Any advice based on your experience, knowledge or just good ideas are appreciated,

Powertrain? Ecoboost 3.5L VS 5.0L 420HP+ 2014 MUSTANG CRATE ENGINE , mated to a tremec T56 .05/1

Anyone want to pipe in on my engine choices? The main idea of towing and hauling leads me towards the ecoboost with it's 420 lbs of torque at only 2500 rpm (Tremec T56 Magnum with final overdrive ratio of 0.50/1 and a Dana 60 Limited Slip diff with 4.56's) However, how reliable is that engine? Is the better gas mileage worth the extra costs for an intercooler and turbocharger maintenance???

3.5L V-6 ECO-BOOST CRATE ENGINE KIT -- M-6007-35T

FORD TREMEC T56 MAGNUM 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION 0.50 6TH -- M-7003-M6295 TUET11011

The kingpin of TREMEC's high performance line-up, the all-new T-56 Magnum double-overdrive 6-speed transmission takes the very best from TREMEC's current OEM technologies and pairs it with the most popular features of the all-business TKO 5-speed. Able to withstand a massive 700 lb-ft. of torque while providing unbelievably crisp shifts, no other manual transmission on the planet offers as much combined strength, versatility, and general ease of use as the new T-56 Magnum.

Known in its O.E. form as the 'TR-6060', the Magnum is an aftermarket version of the same transmission found in many of today's most celebrated factory super cars including the Shelby GT500, ZR1 Corvette, Dodge Viper. A world-class transmission in every respect, it's the best transmission on the market for those who will accept nothing less!

The Tremec T56 Magnum is the strongest version T56 ever offered. Stronger than any OEM T56/TR-6060 used. Stronger than even the Viper T56.
The T56 Magnum is a great transmission upgrade for projects because it comes with dual speedometer pickups(electronic and mechanical) so it can support either style of speedometer signals.
Unlike the inferior OEM T56 variants, the T56 Magnum case also has multiple shifter locations making it more versatile to retrofit into vehicles and hot rod/kit car projects. If needed the shifter can be relocated into these other shifter locations for better fitment in a wider range of chassis.
Incredibly short, extremely low-effort shift throws, with crisp, precise engagement
This T56 Magnum is a great upgrade and replacement for the 2003-2004 Mustang Cobras.
The new Coyote 5.0L has a higher RPM capability than prior Ford engines and the Tremec T56 Magnum shifts better at these higher RPM's making it a great fit for Ford project vehicles or kits cars that are using the new coyote 5.0L engine.
Can be used in 1999-2004 Mustangs and Cobras as well as other applications
May require shorter driveshaft, modified crossmember/trans mount and other minor modifications.
700 lbs./ft. torque capacity (Transmissions are rated based on torque not horsepower.) This transmission is designed to handle engines making up to 700 lbs./ft at the flywheel.
Gear ratios: 1st 2.97; 2nd 2.10; 3rd 1.46; 4th 1.00; 5th 0.74; 6th 0.50
Requires 26 Spline Clutch Disc
Requires 31 Spline Driveshaft Yoke
Tremec recommends Synchromesh fluid
Weighs 135 lbs. dry.

Sorry no one's responded. Probably in awe of that engine. I did notice, though, that your Harley friend has a weird mirror-shaped head.
The only very-limited-experience feedback I can give you is that sometimes I have seen enthusiasts build cars or trucks in which the engine/drivetrain is too much for the chassis technology of the era. In other words, make sure that your suspension, handling, brakes and steering are up to the task of controlling your powerhouse.

As to Frank, that is the husband of the woman I purchased the truck from, she is unrecognizable in the photo but he wasn't so I just mirrored over his face.

I'm planning to upgrade the rear end to a full 4 point suspension and the front end to an IFS, All with power disc brakes and either a newer frame or boxing and using diagonal crossmembers in the one that now is in it. I was going to pick up the powertrain from FordRacingDirect but the pcm package for the Ecoboost 3.5l isn't available yet... So, the search is on for a F150 salvage as a donor. So, if anyone hears of one.....

Just noticed that you're working with a unibody truck. I've read that Ford backtracked on this idea due to warping/twisting of the truck with a significant load in the back. (Doors would stick shut / not close, etc.) Not sure if the camper you're considering would be enough weight to make this a factor, but worth considering/researching as you go along.

Thanks, I've been looking at that as well and the frame will either be significantly modified or I will pull a frame out of the/a donor truck depending on which way I go with finding the Ecoboost motor and control harness. A friend of mine is at the paint stage of his 5 year 900hp 69 camaro rs/ss restomod and has great frame guys in the Chicago area that can make it both strong, stiff and light. They have expressed interest in my project according to him.

Nice Uni!!!! A 6 speed with a coyote engine would really be something. Lots of money being put Into this build. Be sure to try n throw some into body stiffening.

What's the price of a 3.5 Eco or 5.0L Coyote crate engine? Probably at least 10 grand. The Tremac will probably be another 5 grand.

For all the money you're going to pour into this Uni, you could buy a used 2011/2014 F150 XL - STX or XLT Regular Cab with either engine, plus get features like P/S, 4 wheel P/D/B, trailer tow package, power windows and door locks, A/C and etc etc etc.

And, you won't have to deal with the Uni's frame flex problemo. Ford stopped making Uni's in 1963, because when the frame flexed, the doors popped open. Not pleasant!

The only other eco boost thread has stalled as the electronics to get them to run independent has not been figured out yet.

Even the 5.0 has issues with the electronics.

Too Bad. I'm hoping that if I can get a F150 Donor, I'll just pull the whole wiring harness and perhaps even the frame and just build it on the existing system with just the body being placed on top. It will really depend on the possiblities. If I can't get an F150 ecoboost I'll just have to wait for the Ford wiring/pcm package to be released. FordRacingDirect told me it should be by the end of the year but I've read that other people were told that by Ford several years ago already.

There is no logic to this build. I just want to do it. I already have a 68 Mustang that I have rebuilt twice now and is in the process of it's 3rd and hopefully last restoration. I've had that car for 37 years already and it is still as original with no mods to it. My 944S Porsche is also as original including me tracking down an original Blaupunkt cassette/FM/AM to reinstall into it. I have spent this summer slowly returning a 89 Silverado Stepside Shortbox back to original (a vehicle I inherited from my son). My Explorer and Mountaineer are also original and I scour the wreckers to keep everything in the Explorer working as it did when it left the factory. The F250 unibody is going to be my departure from that and I have a vision of what I want it to do. So in this case it may be sooner or later but it will get done eventually. If I can't find my drivetrain package right away I'll get to work on the body panels etc.

As to the costs of the driveline:

Ecoboost 3.5L $7250 plus electronics package should be about $1700 when released

Code:
http://www.fordracingpartsdirect.com/3_5L_V_6_ECO_BOOST_CRATE_ENGINE_KIT_p/m-6007-35t.htm
Coyote 5.0L $6199 plus electronics package at $1700
Code:
http://www.fordracingpartsdirect.com/5_0L_412HP_2011_MUSTANG_CRATE_ENGINE_p/m-6007-m50.htm
Tremec T56 Magnum $2995 Plus Bell Housing from Quicktime at about $700 for either engine

Code:
http://www.fordracingpartsdirect.com/TREMEC_T56_MAGNUM_6_SPEED_TRANSMISSION_0_50_6TH_p/m-7003-m6295.htm
This is why I have started to bid on a low mile F150 ecoboost as some of you have suggested it will shorten the build time and give me a better vehicle with better braking/steering etc.

I have an airframe fabricator who is willing to make some light weight aluminum body stringers to stiffen things up. He said he will base them on Aircraft design so it doesn't add too much weight to the thing. My only costs will be the materials as I'll be trading him for some instruction for one of the licenses he would like.
