It's been said here so many times before, but for those who are new to the diesel game or the forums...this is exactly why it is nessesary to monitor your truck with a device and not just go off of the dash gauges. By the time the dash tells you something is wrong it's usually telling you that it's too late! I'm sure this couple would have gladly spent the $150 on a scan gauge if they knew it could have prevented this mess. Thanks for the vid.
They left the truck and rented another truck to get back to Indiana. Not sure what the plan is with it,, I do know the customer is wanting to sell it. I told him to sleep on it before making any major decisions.
I refer every customer to "read up" on their truck. Sometimes I bombard them with all the updates. I don't want them to think I'm taking advantage of their situation. Like an egr cooler failure,, and I'm suggesting we pop the hpop cover n do updates,, and while the intake is off,, pop the valve covers n do dummy plugs.
I can't remember how many customers I see while they are at the end of their rope with their truck. They all talk about how much they've spent on their trucks at other "diesel shops".
I've never plugged the vent hose and ran a truck. But I think the air in the system cannot get to the "degas" (named for a reason) bottle and prob got stuck at the coolant pump and that could be why it overheated in the first place. It's all speculation tho.
FWIW, on local C-list earlier this summer a guy had an '04 F350 with a "blown motor". No better description listed. The truck looked very clean, but the config was not popular around here - regular cab long bed 2WD. He was asking for $1500 OBO and the ad was up for weeks.
It is a shame something like that happened more than likely due to another shops non understanding of this engine. Another reason I won't let ANY shop touch my engine--other than SDS but man that would be one heck of a tow bill lol.
